Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially named former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for IPL 2027, ending Stephen Fleming’s remarkable 18-year association with the franchise. The Yellove army announced the news in their trademark style: “Left Arm ‘Taking’ Over! Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings!”

The End of an Era

Stephen Fleming steered CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies since 2009, making him one of the most successful coaches in the tournament’s history. He has since moved on to international cricket, taking charge as England’s men’s Test head coach in July.

Zaheer Khan’s Coaching Journey

Since retiring from the IPL in 2017, Zaheer has built an extensive administrative and coaching résumé across multiple franchises:

Role	Franchise	Period
Director of Cricket Operations	Mumbai Indians	2018–2022
Global Head of Cricket Development	Mumbai Indians	Post-2022
Mentor	Lucknow Super Giants	2025
Head Coach	Chennai Super Kings	2027 onwards

A Decorated Playing Career

As a player, Zaheer represented RCB, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals across 100 IPL matches, claiming 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. Internationally, he finished with 610 wickets across all formats and was a key member of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad under MS Dhoni.

Why This Matters

CSK missed the playoffs for a third straight season in 2026, making Zaheer’s appointment a pivotal one. CSK owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed him, citing his playing pedigree and ability to nurture young talent as key assets heading into a crucial rebuilding phase for the five-time champions.
