WhatsApp Channels: A New Way to Broadcast and Connect

The latest addition to WhatsApp introduces a unique form of messaging to the world’s most popular chat app. This feature is designed for one-to-many broadcasts rather than conversations, called WhatsApp Channels. Owned by Meta, the company describes it as “a private way to follow what matters,” highlighting local news and sports updates as potential uses.

Essentially, a channel in WhatsApp resembles a Twitter feed without metrics and reply functionality. WhatsApp has observed the demand from governments, transit agencies, brands, and others seeking an alternative platform (other than Twitter) to share their important updates. WhatsApp Channels aim to fulfil this need.

Channels also serve as a tool for content creators, allowing them to share text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls with their audience. WhatsApp plans to incorporate payment and monetization services into channels as well. Users can discover channels by searching within WhatsApp or browsing through a dedicated directory, and the most recent updates will be displayed in the app’s Status section.

Privacy is a significant aspect of the channel experience, as WhatsApp ensures that channel admins’ information remains private and only stores 30 days of a channel’s history. Admins have the ability to block screenshots and forwards, ensuring that channel content remains within the channel. However, unlike end-to-end encrypted messages, channels are treated similarly to conversations with businesses, which are not entirely private. WhatsApp is considering implementing encryption for certain channels in the future.

While this feature seems obvious for WhatsApp to introduce, Telegram has offered a similar feature called Channels for years, focused on one-to-many broadcasts. Instagram also has a comparable feature called Broadcast Channels. It makes sense to incorporate this type of information within WhatsApp, as receiving updates on air quality and train statuses feels more natural within a messaging app than being mixed in with everything else on Twitter.

Zooming out, WhatsApp is evolving into more than just a messaging app. In recent months, the company has introduced features such as multi-device support, a private newsletter tool, a new username system, polls, shopping capabilities, and various Facebook-like additions. WhatsApp Channels represent the latest attempt to merge social media with messaging.

Channels will initially have a limited launch, partnering with leading global organizations and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore. The feature will be available only in these two countries initially, but it is expected to expand to more countries and offer channel creation to a broader user base in the coming months.

Although WhatsApp remains primarily a messaging app, used by billions of people to communicate with friends and family, it aims to grow, generate more revenue, and transform into an all-encompassing super app that goes beyond messaging.
