What’s New in iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3: A Look at the Latest Features

Apple has released the initial betas for the upcoming iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 updates to developers for testing. This release follows closely on the heels of iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2, which were launched just a day earlier.

Developers who are registered for the beta testing program can participate by navigating to the Settings app, accessing the Software Update section, selecting “Beta Updates,” and enabling the iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 Developer Beta. An Apple ID linked to a developer account is necessary to download and install the beta versions.

One notable addition is the Stolen Device Protection feature. This security measure restricts access to private information if someone gains possession of both the iPhone and the passcode. When activated, Face ID or Touch ID verification is required for tasks such as accessing passwords in iCloud Keychain, disabling Lost Mode, conducting purchases through Safari with saved payment details, and more.

Certain features with verification requirements are subject to a one-hour delay in access, including changing an Apple ID passcode, or an iPhone passcode, turning off Find My, and disabling Face ID. Additional details on Stolen Device Protection can be found in our dedicated article.

While the latest version brings these security enhancements, users are still anticipating features promised by Apple for iOS 17, including collaborative Apple Music playlists and AirPlay on Hotel Room TVs. Apple has indicated that these features will be introduced in 2024, and there is a possibility they may be included in the beta as iOS 17.3 is expected to be officially released in January 2024.

Furthermore, ongoing developments from Apple include the implementation of app sideloading in the European Union, a next-generation CarPlay feature, and the adoption of rich communication services (RCS). However, it remains uncertain whether these features will be part of iOS 17.3 or will be introduced in the subsequent iOS 18.
