Based on a webtoon that reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid is set in 1926 Gyeongseong during Japanese occupation and follows the story of Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who dedicates everything to his country, and Su A, a woman who risks her life to protect him.

Full Cast Breakdown

Choi Woo Shik plays independence fighter Kang Eui Hyeon, who has a pro-Japanese father. While carrying out a mission to liberate his country, he is saved by Heo Su A, who he begins to consider his country.

Mun Ka Young plays the kind-hearted Heo Su A, a maid of a pro-Japanese household. After helping rescue Kang Ui Hyeon from the sea, the two begin to develop feelings for each other.

Heo Nam Jun plays independence fighter Song Hae Su, who — after losing his family — becomes a resolute figure willing to sacrifice his life for the greater cause, continuing to cross paths with Heo Su A as if by fate.

Yoo Jae Myung plays Kang Eui Hyeon’s pro-Japanese father, while Kang Han Na takes on the role of Han Yeon Kyung, a strong figure who never loses her resolve for independence despite personal loss. Kim Yeo Jin plays Hwang Soon Im, the café owner who serves as a safe haven and emotional anchor for the independence fighters.
