One of Hollywood’s grittiest thriller franchises is coming back, and it’s bringing the original trio with it. Sicario 3 is moving forward with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin all set to return, according to Deadline.

The Original Trio Reunites

The three stars are returning as Kate Macer (Blunt), Alejandro Gillick (del Toro), and Matt Graver (Brolin). Blunt’s return is the real headline. She starred in Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 original but sat out 2018’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which leaned on del Toro and Brolin instead. Reports say all three signed on after reading the latest script.

A New Creative Team

Padraic McKinley will direct. He recently made the Ethan Hawke Western The Weight, and he started as an editor. The script comes from Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. That suggests a fresh direction, since Taylor Sheridan wrote the first two films. Competing reports have muddied his involvement. Variety earlier claimed Sheridan had already written a script, while Deadline says Knight is writing it. Neither side has settled the question publicly.

What We Know About the Story

Almost nothing. Plot details are under wraps, though trade reports describe it as a possible “trilogy capper” rather than just another sequel. The first film followed an idealistic FBI agent pulled into a covert operation against a Mexican drug cartel, only to find her mission went far deeper than she’d been told. The second shifted focus to Alejandro and Graver in an escalating border conflict.

Why Fans Are Cautiously Excited

Some critics are wary about making another Sicario without Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose slow-burn dread defined the original. Still, getting Blunt back at the peak of her stardom is a significant coup, particularly because the franchise was never built around a multi-film commitment from her. McKinley’s work on The Weight suggests he knows how to build tension, and Knight’s writing credentials add weight.

What’s Next

Filming is expected to begin in early 2027, with no release date announced. The first two Sicario films were released by Lionsgate, but the third currently has no distributor and is being shopped to studios.
