IT employees across India may soon be working from home again — not because of a pandemic, but because of a national call for fuel conservation. The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), one of India’s most vocal IT worker unions, has formally written to the Ministry of Labour and Employment urging the Centre to issue a mandatory work-from-home (WFH) advisory for the IT/ITES sector.

Here’s everything you need to know.

NITES Letter to Labour Ministry — Key Details

Letter DateMay 11, 2026

Addressed ToLabour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya
Core DemandMandatory WFH advisory for IT/ITES sector
Reason CitedFuel conservation, traffic reduction, national interest
TriggerPM Modi’s appeal to reduce travel and adopt WFH

Why NITES Is Pushing for Mandatory WFH

The push comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and establishments to adopt measures such as work from home, virtual meetings, and reduced unnecessary travel amid global geopolitical and economic challenges.

NITES

NITES seized on that moment. In its letter, the union said PM Modi’s statement “was not merely an operational suggestion — it was a national call for collective responsibility during a sensitive period where reducing fuel dependency, traffic burden, and unnecessary consumption becomes part of contributing towards national interest.” Business Today

The union pointed out that forcing lakhs of employees to commute daily despite the availability of digital alternatives is placing unnecessary pressure on fuel consumption, public infrastructure, and employee well-being. “Employees in metropolitan cities spend several hours daily travelling despite performing work that can effectively be delivered remotely,” NITES said. “This not only impacts physical and mental health, but also results in avoidable fuel usage and environmental burden.”

The COVID Precedent NITES Is Banking On

The union’s strongest argument is one India has already lived through. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, almost the entire Indian IT industry transitioned to Work from Home within a very short period. Despite one of the most difficult global crises in modern history, the Indian IT sector maintained operations, delivered international projects, supported global clients, protected economic activity, and contributed significantly to the stability of the Indian economy,” the letter noted.

NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja said, “The IT/ITeS sector has both the infrastructure and capability to once again support national priorities through remote working.” Prokerala

What Exactly Is NITES Asking For?

The union has requested the Labour Ministry to issue an advisory directing IT/ITES firms and digitally deliverable service sectors to implement mandatory work from home “wherever operationally feasible” for an appropriate period. According to the letter, such a move could help reduce fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and environmental stress while ensuring uninterrupted economic activity through digital operations. Saluja also clarified the intent: the request was not aimed at creating confrontation with employers, but rather promoting collective national cooperation. Business Today

What It Means for IT Employees

The development is likely to reopen the larger debate around hybrid work, employee flexibility, and corporate productivity, especially as India’s tech industry balances economic caution with return-to-office mandates. Major firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have all pushed for increased office presence over the past two years — a WFH advisory could directly challenge those policies. Indiantelevision

FAQs

Q: What is NITES and why does it matter for IT employees?

NITES (Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate) is one of India’s most prominent IT employee unions, led by Advocate Harpreet Singh Saluja. The union has increasingly emerged as a vocal body within India’s tech industry, frequently taking up issues related to layoffs, onboarding delays, workplace policies, and employee welfare — including past interventions involving Infosys, Wipro, and TCS. Q: Is the WFH advisory already in effect for IT companies?

Not yet. As of May 11, 2026, NITES has only submitted its formal letter to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The government has not yet issued any official advisory. The request asks for WFH to be implemented “wherever operationally feasible” — so even if approved, it would not be a blanket mandate for every IT role.
