Joe Madureira, the co-founder of Airship Syndicate, revealed Wayfinder, an online action-RPG partnership with Digital Extremes, at The Game Awards. The announcement came during Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards 2022, which was jam-packed with new announcements and trailers, including From Software’s Armored Core 6, Kojima’s Death Stranding 2, and so much more.
Wayfinder’s reveal was long overdue, given that Airship Syndicate and Digital Extremes announced cooperation four months ago at TennoCon 2022. Having recently completed another project with Riot Games, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, Airship Syndicate’s upcoming project has already been announced to be it’s most ambitious to date. Formerly known as Skylight, fans were fully aware that something will be displayed thanks to the studio’s announcement that it would be at The Game Awards.
Joe Madureira unveiled the first trailer for the newly branded and free-to-play title Wayfinder after joining Geoff Keighley.
With many unique Wayfinder characters to play as, players cannot only personalize their appearance, but also equip them with weapons, armor, and skills to match their playstyles. A number of them were shown in the teaser, including the assassin Niss, the tank-like Wingrave, Kyros the battle-mage, Silo, who handles ranged weaponry like firearms, and the monstrous Amazon-style Sanja.
In terms of gameplay, the trailer gives fans more than a few hints at what to expect from the former Skylight project. In addition to character growth and seeking various riches, Wayfinder assigns players to visit Lost Zones, which are randomized expeditions that players can alter with mutators as well as augments and mods that the game offers. The game will also include Cross Play and Cross Save, as well as a social arena where players can connect, buy housing, and form groups to tackle more difficult material that has yet to be released.
While the game is scheduled for early access in the spring of 2023, interested players can get in as early as December 13 when Airship Syndicate launches its first PC-only test. Given that this is Airship’s take on the MMO-style genre, Digital Extremes has collaborated to provide their knowledge with the free-to-play features as well as their experience with ever-changing community-driven products, given how popular Warframe is all these years later.
Wayfinder is launching in Early Access Spring 2023 for PC, PS4, and PS5.
