Virat Kohli’s Sensational 106* vs West Indies: Inside His 55th ODI Century

Some innings are about winning a match. Others are about history. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 106 against West Indies in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram managed to be both, sealing a comfortable 8-wicket victory while simultaneously rewriting the record books yet again.

A Vintage Virat Kohli Special

Chasing 296 for victory, Kohli walked out with the platform already stable and proceeded to bat with the kind of controlled aggression that has defined his career for over a decade. He brought up his century off just 74 balls, the third-fastest of his glittering ODI career, before finishing unbeaten on 106 as India cantered home with wickets and overs to spare.

Two Milestones in One Innings

What made the knock especially memorable was that Kohli crossed 15,000 ODI runs during the very same innings, en route to the century. He became only the second batter in history, after Sachin Tendulkar, to reach the milestone, and did so in his 303rd ODI innings. It capped a rare double: a career landmark and a match-winning hundred in the same passage of play, in front of a rapturous home crowd in Thiruvananthapuram.

As he brought up three figures with a six off left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, Kohli allowed himself a rare moment of emotion, soaking in a standing ovation from the crowd before quickly refocusing on finishing the job. It was, by most accounts, a masterclass in pacing a run-chase: watchful early, ruthless once set.

Extending an Already Unmatched Legacy

This was Kohli’s 55th ODI century, stretching his own world record further ahead of Sachin Tendulkar’s 49. It was also his 10th century against West Indies specifically, matching his tally against Sri Lanka for the most centuries he has scored against any single opponent in ODI cricket. Overall, it marked his 86th international hundred across formats, a number that continues to grow even as Kohli approaches the twilight of a career that has already redefined modern batting standards.

With India’s white-ball setup building steadily towards the 2027 World Cup, this innings served as a timely reminder that, even a decade on from his peak years, Kohli remains the man to watch whenever India chase a target.
