Villarreal Fans Protest Manor Solomon Signing Over the Player’s Palestine Stance

When Villarreal announced the loan signing of Tottenham winger Manor Solomon, they expected to showcase a late attacking reinforcement after losing Yeremy Pino and Karl Etta Eyong. Instead, the move sparked a storm of anger, with fans publicly rejecting the Israeli international and accusing the club of betraying its values.

Background: Why Villarreal Fans Are Outraged

Supporters went as far as releasing a powerful statement:

“Meet Manor Solomon. He proudly and outwardly supports Israel’s genocide and illegal occupation of Palestine and its people. Manor Solomon is not welcome at Villarreal and does not deserve the affection of its supporters.”

This blunt declaration underscores a deepening divide between Villarreal’s boardroom decisions and the moral expectations of their fan base.

Villarreal had already tested the patience of their supporters earlier this summer with the free transfer of Thomas Partey, despite serious allegations of rape and sexual assault against the Ghanaian midfielder. The decision was met with anger, but the signing of Manor Solomon has opened a new and even more sensitive wound.

Villarreal’s Controversial Transfers (2024-25)

The optics of two major signings being tied to controversy has left fans questioning the club’s values.

Who Is Manor Solomon?

The 26-year-old winger has been capped 44 times for Israel and built a reputation as a tricky, pace-driven forward. But his career has often been shadowed by political controversy.

• Public Statements: Solomon has previously voiced support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, currently under review by the International Court of Justice for potential genocide.
• Accusations: Critics accuse him of backing what they describe as “genocide and occupation.”
• Abuse Suffered: During his loan spell at Leeds United, Solomon was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse online and in stadiums.

The intersection of sport, politics, and identity has made Solomon a polarizing figure wherever he plays.

Social Media Backlash

The Villarreal announcement post introducing Solomon was immediately flooded with Palestine flags, angry comments, and even biting sarcasm.

One of the viral fan reactions read:

“In winter, you have to sign Mussolini’s grandson, since they can’t hate us any more than they already do.”

Others took a more serious tone:

“Congratulations, Villarreal. This is what happens when values don’t exist or are made of cardboard.”

The backlash was not confined to Twitter. On forums and fan groups, supporters questioned whether the club was prioritizing sporting needs over social responsibility.

Internal Tensions at Villarreal

The controversy also highlights contradictions within the squad. While Solomon’s arrival has angered fans, some Villarreal players—past and present—have openly supported the Palestinian cause.

Villarreal Players and Palestine Support

This ideological clash within the locker room only amplifies the unease surrounding Solomon’s presence.

Spain’s Political Context

Spain, alongside Ireland, has been one of Europe’s strongest critics of Israeli policy. The Spanish government formally recognized Palestine as a state in 2024, accusing Israel of “genocide in Gaza.” Against this backdrop, the signing of an outspoken Israeli international looks even more provocative.
