Yash’s much-hyped Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has wrapped up its theatrical run at approximately ₹300 crore gross, falling dramatically short of the reported ₹800 crore breakeven target set for one of Indian cinema’s most expensive productions.

A Gamble That Didn’t Pay Off
Before release, a leading OTT platform had reportedly offered around ₹150 crore for the film’s digital rights across all languages. Confident that a strong theatrical run would push the film’s value even higher, Yash — who also produced the project under Monster Mind Creations — reportedly turned down the offer, holding out for a bigger payday.
The Steep Fall in OTT Value
That bet backfired badly. Following the film’s underwhelming theatrical performance, OTT offers reportedly crashed to just around ₹30 crore — a staggering drop of nearly 80% from the pre-release valuation.
Digital Premiere Confirmed
Despite the setback, Toxic has now found a streaming home, with the film set to premiere on ZEE5 on September 25, 2026.
What Went Wrong
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic opened strongly but couldn’t sustain momentum after largely negative word-of-mouth set in. The film, featuring an ensemble cast including Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasanth, is now widely cited in trade circles as a cautionary tale of how a big-budget tentpole with sky-high pre-release buzz can still crumble under audience scrutiny.
Why It Matters
Toxic’s trajectory serves as a reminder that theatrical success and streaming value are deeply intertwined — and that overestimating post-release leverage can prove costly, even for one of India’s biggest stars.
