Top Boy Isn’t Done: Barry Keoghan Returns for Gritty Prequel ‘Jonny Boy’

Just when fans thought East London’s most iconic crime saga had closed its final chapter, Netflix has cracked the door back open — and this time, it’s handing the keys to Barry Keoghan. The Oscar-nominated actor is returning to the Top Boy universe in a brand-new prequel series, Jonny Boy, alongside a second spinoff centered on fan-favorite Jaq.

What Is Jonny Boy?

Announced at the Netflix Spotlight panel during the Edinburgh TV Festival, Jonny Boy is a five-episode prequel exploring the origin story of Jonny McGee — the character Keoghan first introduced in Top Boy’s third and final season. The series digs into Jonny’s role as a drug distributor working for his uncle Tadgh McGee’s Irish crime syndicate, long before the events fans already know.

Keoghan’s Passion Project

This isn’t just a casting reunion — Keoghan is deeply invested behind the scenes too. Through his production company Wolfcub, he’s serving as an executive producer alongside co-founder Des Byrne. In a joint statement, the pair described the project as bringing Jonny McGee’s origin story to life “through a new bold lens,” calling it a passion project they pitched directly to Netflix.

Keoghan joins the show fresh off a packed slate that includes playing Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles biopic and reprising his role as the Joker in The Batman: Part II — making his return to the Top Boy world a notable addition to an already stacked few years.

A Second Spinoff Is Also Coming

Netflix didn’t stop at one new series. A second, currently untitled spinoff will center on Jaq, the operations manager for the Summerhouse gang, with Jasmine Jobson reprising her BAFTA-nominated role. This series is written by Ryan Calais Cameron, known for the acclaimed play For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy. Filming is also set to begin in 2027.

Why the Franchise Keeps Expanding

Top Boy originally aired on Channel 4 before Drake helped champion its revival at Netflix, where it ran for three additional seasons chronicling gang life in East London. Creator Ronan Bennett has long hinted there was more story left to tell, and these two new series confirm the world isn’t finished expanding.

Crime dramas exploring gang life and urban crime syndicates have become a defining strand of modern British television drama, and Top Boy remains one of its most influential entries.
