World Cup

Italy’s unbeaten run of 37 successive games came to an end with their 2-1 defeat to Spain. Luis Enrique led his men to a victory against the Azzurri at home. The champions of Europe were defeated at home for the first time in many years. And in this article, we’ll look at the top 5 international winning streaks in history:

Brazil — 35 (1993-1996)

The last game that Brazil lost prior to their 35-game winning streak was against the USA in 1993. They did not lose another game until they were overcome by Mexico in the Gold Cup. During this time, they lifted the 1994 World Cup. While they were defeated in the 1995 Copa America by Uruguay on penalties, the result was ultimately a draw in the record books.

Spain —35 (2007-2009)

Spain’s golden era saw them go on an unbeaten run that matched mighty Brazil from over a decade ago. They won the Euros in 2008 and won the World Cup in 2010 by defeating the Netherlands in South Africa. La Roja retained their title as European champions in 2012, long after their unbeaten run had been ended by the USA in the Confederations Cup.

Argentina — 31 (1991-1993)

Argentina lifted the Copa America in 1991 and 1993 as part of their unbeaten run. They did not lose after their defeat to West Germany in 1990, and the two-year run was only broken by Colombia in the World Cup qualifiers for 1994.

France — 30 (1994-1996)

The reigning World Cup winners failed to qualify for the competition in 1990 and 1994, and France beat Italy in 1994 to start their unbeaten run. Their undefeated run was overcome by Denmark in a friendly.

Italy — 30 (1935-1939)

In the 1930s, Italy was absolutely untouchable and lifted the World Cup twice in the decade. Italy had its unbeaten run for four years almost a century, in comparison to their run for three years recently. They also won the Olympic Gold Medal during this time.
