What’s the Story?
Birmingham, 1940. The Second World War has arrived, and with it, one final reckoning. Tommy Shelby — last seen in self-imposed exile — is pulled back into the family’s world when his estranged son becomes tangled in a Nazi plot. With both the Shelby family and the nation itself on the line, Tommy must confront his demons and choose: redeem his legacy, or burn it down entirely.
The film is set 21 years after we first met the Shelbys and marks a significant time jump even from the end of Season 6. Shooting took place in Birmingham’s Digbeth Loc Studios and across the West Midlands from September to December 2024, with locations chosen to honour the show’s deep roots in the city. Murphy himself co-produced, and told Netflix simply: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.”
With a Barry Keoghan introduction as a new Shelby bloodline member and the magnetic Rebecca Ferguson in an enigmatic new role, the next generation of the franchise is already being quietly assembled.
