What Makes This Movie Different?

According to Warner Bros., Digger follows the planet’s most powerful individual who desperately tries proving he’s humanity’s savior—right before the catastrophe he created destroys everything. The cryptic teaser shows Cruise in heavy prosthetics, dancing with a spade across surreal backdrops that scream Les Grossman energy from Tropic Thunder.

This marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since The Revenant (2015), where he helped Leonardo DiCaprio finally snag his Oscar. The director co-wrote the script with his Birdman collaborators Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, plus acclaimed playwright Sabina Berman—promising the razor-sharp wit and visual storytelling Iñárritu is famous for.

Star Power Meets Oscar Pedigree

The supporting cast reads like an awards season dream team: Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Emma D’Arcy. With this talent and Iñárritu’s track record, Oscar buzz is already swirling around Cruise’s transformative performance.

Shot entirely on 35mm VistaVision film—a rare choice in today’s digital age—the movie promises a visually stunning theatrical experience. Industry insiders report Iñárritu described the film as something entirely new, claiming Cruise’s performance will astonish audiences worldwide.

The Saul Bass-inspired poster and Cruise’s enthusiastic social media post (“Let’s f***ing go!”) have ignited massive anticipation. As his first comedy since the 2000s and first Warner Bros. project since Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Digger represents both a homecoming and a radical reinvention for the 62-year-old icon.
