Tom Cruise Reacts to Digger Box Office Struggles as His Latest Film Faces a Major Setback

Tom Cruise is addressing the disappointing box office performance of Digger, his latest film directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Despite the star power behind the project, the comedy-drama has reportedly struggled to attract audiences following its October 2, 2026, release in the United States.

The film’s reported opening figures have raised questions about its commercial prospects, making it one of the most closely watched box office disappointments of the year.

Tom Cruise Shares His Perspective on Digger

Speaking on the On Film podcast with Kevin McCarthy, Cruise reflected on how the theatrical landscape has changed over the decades. The actor suggested that a film’s long-term legacy cannot always be determined by its initial box office performance.

Cruise recalled a time when movies could remain in cinemas for months or even a year, allowing audiences to discover them gradually. He referred to films such as Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July while discussing the longer theatrical runs that were once common.

His comments highlight a broader change in Hollywood, where opening-weekend numbers and immediate audience reactions often dominate discussions about a film’s success.

Digger Box Office Numbers and Budget

According to the report, Digger earned approximately $8 million in domestic theatres and $12 million internationally across 74 territories. The film reportedly carries a production budget of $160 million, with another $100 million spent on marketing.

These figures suggest a significant financial challenge. However, the final financial outcome will depend on the film’s subsequent theatrical performance, distribution arrangements, and other revenue streams.

What Is Digger About?

In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon whose drilling project sets off a catastrophic environmental disaster. The film features a notable ensemble cast, including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, and Jesse Plemons.

The project also represents a departure from Cruise’s familiar action-heavy roles. While some viewers have welcomed his attempt to explore a different kind of character, the film’s reception and commercial performance have generated debate.

Can Digger Recover at the Box Office?

Despite the disappointing reported opening, the film’s eventual performance remains to be seen. Positive word of mouth, a sustained theatrical run, and later home-entertainment releases could influence its overall commercial prospects.

Cruise’s comments suggest that he remains mindful of cinema’s longer-term cultural value rather than judging a film solely by its opening weekend. Whether Digger can find a wider audience, however, remains an open question.
