Thibaut Courtois signs contract extension with Real Madrid

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has signed a new contract with the club, taking his tenure with Los Blancos till 2026. His previous contract was set to run out in 2024 and he has added two more years to his current deal.

The club’s official website and social accounts confirmed the renewal, with the goalkeeper posing with Florentino Perez holding up a shirt reading ‘Courtois 2026’.

The Belgian joined the Spanish giants from Chelsea in 2018 for £35 million, and struggled between the sticks initially. However, over the last few seasons, he has managed to find his best form and helped the team win the La Liga title in 2019/20, keeping 21 clean sheets as the club lifted the league title for the 34th time in their history.

Right now, he is one of the most important players in the squad and has established himself as the undisputed first-choice keeper in the team. His presence will be vital for the club going forward especially since he is in his prime years, at 29.

Considering that goalkeepers have longer careers than outfield players, this might not be the last contract extension Courtois has with Madrid since he will be 34 by the time his deal runs out in 2026. Although he has only won one major trophy with Real Madrid, he was the recipient of the Zamora Trophy in 19/20, and also received the FIFA The Best award in 2018.
