What is They Will Kill You about?
Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) is an ex-convict trying to rebuild her life. She takes a job as a housekeeper at The Virgil — a sleek, impossibly expensive Manhattan apartment building. But Asia isn’t there for the paycheck. She’s looking for her younger sister Maria (Myha’la), who vanished while working in the same building.
What Asia discovers inside The Virgil is worse than anything she survived in prison: the entire building is run by a Satanic cult. The wealthy residents conduct ritualistic human sacrifices of their staff. With the doors locked and the cult closing in, Asia’s prison-honed fighting skills become her only way out. As one battered survivor puts it at the film’s end: “Rich people.” That’s about all the explanation the film needs.

Is it worth streaming?
Director Kirill Sokolov shoots the whole thing like he’s Wes Anderson remaking The Raid — all saturated colours and eerily composed tableaux, even when he’s following a disembodied eyeball on its own solo adventure. The supporting cast is a lot of fun: Patricia Arquette hamming it up as the sinister cult leader Lilith, Tom Felton going deliciously against type as a cloaked Satanist, and Heather Graham in full gonzo mode. But this is Zazie Beetz’s show — physically demanding, fiercely charismatic, and genuinely menacing from the first frame to the last.
Verdict: If you enjoy gonzo horror comedies with a fiercely committed lead, a gorgeous gothic setting, and the distinct feeling that everyone on screen was having an absolute blast making it, They Will Kill You delivers exactly what it promises. Just don’t apply for a job at The Virgil.
