The Testaments season 1 concluded on Hulu with the finale episode titled Secateurs, which aired on May 27, 2026. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, the season ends exactly as Gilead demands — with sacrifice, secrets, and the first sparks of something that could burn the whole regime down.

What Happened to Becka?

The previous episode ended on a major cliffhanger with Becka being taken away by the Eyes after killing her abusive father in cold blood. The finale’s central mission becomes Agnes and Daisy working to save Becka from capital punishment — or worse, the Red Center.

Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala secretly help protect her by convincing Mrs. Grove to take the blame for the murder. She does so willingly and is later executed. Meanwhile, Becka is heavily sedated and forced to marry Garth — and right before the wedding, she shares a heartbreaking kiss with Agnes.

Garth carried her over the threshold and put her to bed before locking her in the bedroom for her own safety. Becka appeared barely conscious throughout the ceremony, her self-harm wounds visible through her wedding dress. It was not a happy ending for anyone in that room.

Agnes’ Sacrifice and the Truth About Her Past

Agnes made her most devastating sacrifice in the finale. Her engagement to Commander Weston had already collapsed due to the scandal surrounding Becka. Rather than simply grieving the loss, Agnes petitioned Garth directly to marry Becka, reasoning that if her friend was married, she would be shielded from the worst of Gilead’s punishment — and in doing so, Agnes gave up the love of her life.

Agnes bravely told Commander Weston that she was one of the girls sexually abused by Dr. Grove, which prompted him to do what he could to help Becka. The finale also reveals the truth about Agnes’ true lineage, which she learns from Daisy in the final scene of the season.

Daisy’s Rebellion and What It Means for Season 2

Daisy urged Garth that Mayday had to get Becka out of prison. When he refused, calling it too dangerous, Garth reported her escalating behaviour to June. June subsequently sent a coded message to get Daisy out of Gilead — she was done with her.

What it makes clear is that while Daisy may not be June’s daughter, she’s a lot like her — choosing to go back into Gilead despite the dangers because of the girls she’s met there and believing she can save them.

By the end of the finale, Agnes, Daisy, and Shunammite are clearly poised as the leaders of a new rebellion that will bring Gilead to its knees.
