The Table: Day and Night: Overview

Four Couples, One Café

The film is set during the change from summer to fall and follows four pairs of men and women who cross paths at the same café. Yoo Jin (Kim Min Ha) and Hyeon Oh (Joo Jong Hyuk) meet by chance after visiting at different times of day. Sang Mi (Han Sun Hwa) and Young Min (Chang Ryul) run into each other again after sharing private tutoring sessions in middle school. Aspiring idol Na Kyeong (Jeon So Young) shares bittersweet moments with her boyfriend Jong Su (Kim Dong Hwi). And then there is the pair everyone is talking about.

Hye Jin and Dong Nam: A Fiery First Meeting

Shim Eun Kyung plays Hye Jin, a popular web novel writer with a sharp personality who says exactly what she thinks. In the new still, she stares at someone with an openly displeased look and makes no effort to hide it. Lee Hee Joon plays Dong Nam, an indie filmmaker who can seem overconfident but is impossible to dislike. In his still, he casually spins a story with a sly smile, clearly proud of his way with words. The contrast between her piercing gaze and his playful charm hints at plenty of back-and-forth from the moment they meet. You can read more about the actress on Shim Eun-kyung’s Wikipedia page.

Why This Film Looks Appealing?

Instead of big plot twists, the film seems to rely on conversation, where small talk and awkward silences carry the story. A café is the perfect setting for it, since everyone has overheard a conversation there and wondered what the story behind it is. If you enjoy gentle, dialogue-driven films with a seasonal feel, this one could be a strong pick for the cooler months. Having four stories in one film also gives viewers a little something to connect with, whether they prefer sparring, nostalgia or heartbreak.
