The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie: How Jenny Han Built an Empire from Olive Garden to Amazon

The summer i turned pretty movie is officially happening, but the story behind creator Jenny Han’s journey from working at Olive Garden to securing multi-million dollar deals with Netflix and Amazon is equally captivating. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film and the inspiring path that made it possible.

Jenny Han’s Journey: Quick Facts

The Humble Beginnings Behind The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie

Before the summer i turned pretty movie was even a possibility, Jenny Han was reshelfing books at a library, serving breadsticks at Olive Garden, and nannying to make ends meet. These weren’t just survival jobs—they became the foundation of her storytelling success.

Working as a school librarian proved particularly valuable. Han spent her days observing what young readers craved, reading new books daily, and understanding audience demands. This hands-on market research would later help her create stories that resonated with millions.

“I’ve always been trying to understand my audience as a novelist,” Han revealed on the Marketplace podcast. “As a librarian, I would read new books every day because my young readers were coming in and demanding new stories.”

From Page to Screen: The Netflix and Amazon Phenomenon

Han released her first novel in 2009, establishing herself in the young adult genre. But the real breakthrough came when she secured streaming deals that transformed her books into cultural phenomena.

Her To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy became one of Netflix’s most-viewed original films, attracting over 80 million subscribers. The success spawned a spinoff series, XO, Kitty, further expanding her empire.

Then came the summer i turned pretty movie universe. Amazon Studios picked up the rights in 2021, and the series became a massive hit. Season 3 alone drew 25 million viewers globally within seven days, making it Prime Video’s fifth most-watched returning season.

The Upcoming Movie: What We Know

Following the series finale in September 2025, Prime Video officially announced that the summer i turned pretty movie will conclude Belly’s journey. Han will write and direct the film alongside co-writer Sarah Kucserka.

“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han stated at the Paris premiere celebration.

Movie Details:

• Plot: The film will feature a significant “milestone” in Belly’s life (likely her wedding to Conrad)
• Timeline: Not expected before 2026-2027, as filming hasn’t begun
• Cast: Expected to return including Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno
• Creative Control: Han emphasizes wanting the actors closer to adulthood before filming

Building a Romance Empire

Han’s journey from library worker to entertainment mogul mirrors other successful entrepreneurs who started in unconventional places. Like Spanx founder Sara Blakely selling fax machines or Eventbrite CEO Julia Hartz leaving Hollywood, Han proved that understanding your audience matters more than traditional career paths.

“Book publishing is very different from Hollywood in that there’s not as much money,” Han explained. “You really have to—from the very beginning—be selling yourself, selling your books.”

Her librarian experience gave her something money can’t buy: direct insight into what readers truly want. This understanding transformed the summer i turned pretty movie franchise from a book trilogy into a global sensation streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The Takeaway

The summer i turned pretty movie represents more than just another teen romance—it’s proof that career success often comes from unexpected beginnings. Han’s years observing teenage readers, working service jobs, and honing her craft created the perfect foundation for building an entertainment empire worth millions.
