What Is The Odyssey About?

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus (Matt Damon), King of Ithaca, on his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. Beset on all sides by gods and monsters, Odysseus and his men must fight to return home, while his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) try to hold the Kingdom of Ithaca together in his absence.

Zendaya plays Athena. Charlize Theron is Calypso. Robert Pattinson plays Antinous. Jon Bernthal appears as Menelaus. This isn’t just a cast — it’s a cinematic constellation.

A Film That Rewrote the Rules of IMAX

The Odyssey marks a historical milestone: it is the first-ever feature film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras. While Nolan had previously used the cameras for major action sequences in The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer, the sheer volume of the camera rigs meant dialogue scenes had to be shot on standard film. For The Odyssey, Nolan challenged IMAX engineers to build a completely new, quieter prototype camera, allowing cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema to capture 100% of the film’s runtime on the highest-quality analogue format in existence.

Early reactions have called it a masterpiece. That’s not hyperbole — it’s a Nolan film built on an impossible ambition that actually delivered.

When Is The Odyssey OTT Release Date?

No official streaming date has been confirmed. Given the scale of the IMAX production and Nolan’s vocal support for the theatrical experience, The Odyssey is not likely to stream on Peacock anytime soon. To recoup its $250 million budget, Nolan and Universal surely intend to keep the film in theatres for as long as possible.

Universal Pictures has confirmed that several upcoming releases will remain exclusively in cinemas for a minimum of five weekends in 2026 before moving to home entertainment platforms.

Nolan’s previous release, Oppenheimer, also distributed by Universal, was released in July 2023 and didn’t stream on Peacock until February 2024 — suggesting The Odyssey OTT release date on Peacock could arrive as late as early 2027.
