The Medium is a beautiful implementation of Ray Tracing & DLSS – tested on RTX 3080

NVIDIA promises RTX OFF and RTX ON offer nearly identical FPS in The Medium, so here’s what we have found:

Games have got a lot more graphic intensive these days, but graphics cards are now far more powerful than before thanks to the evolution of technology. This is why we are getting more visually appealing games these days, and one such example has to be the recently released “The Medium” game.

Developed by Bloober Team, the game gives horror fans a unique experience, with gameplay occurring simultaneously across two realities. On PC, The Medium’s disturbing and oppressive atmosphere is further enhanced by Microsoft DirectX Ray Tracing (DXR) and NVIDIA DLSS. 

NVIDIA did send us the info that this would the least effective to frame rates when RTX & DLSS is ON and we did set to test your RTX 3080 for this. Turns out, NVIDIA is true and you can be amazed at the sheer quality of the visuals in the game.

According to NVIDIA’s data, the frame rates remains the same or even get boosted when you turn RTX + DLSS ON without any impact whatsoever. This helps you give the best visuals with minimal loss to frame rates, which is indeed true.

We tested this out at day one of the game releases, with a ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3080 AMP Holo paired with AMD Ryzen 7 5800X:

When tested at highest settings at 4K without turning on the RTX or DLSS you get around 55-60 FPS with a beefy GPU like RTX 3080 that suggests how graphic consuming the game is.

When you turn on ray tracing, the game becomes beautiful as you see the reflections making the game even more lifelike. However, there’s a huge dip in framerates, almost getting halved without DLSS.

As you see with DLSS, you comfortably get 60 FPS at 4K high settings, making the game not only beautiful but also very much playable. This is one of the best games to fully utilize NVIDIA’s both RTX and DLSS features, so the claim of NVIDIA is 100% true.

The game is a unique one as the character involved in the game has to face two realities simultaneously. So, with the gameplay occurring simultaneously in two different realities, The Medium essentially renders two games at once (in a split screen mode), greatly increasing the demands on your GPU.

So, as NVIDIA explains, “The dual reality system is uniquely challenging on system resources in that the game scene is rendered twice for each frame, and performance is affected accordingly. As a result, DLSS provides a huge benefit in this game.”

However, still, the game attains 60 FPS keeping both RTX and DLSS turned on, kudos to NVIDIA as well as Bloober Team to comfortably handling such demanding task without affecting frame rates. So, go get an RTX 30-series GPU, if you get one, and obviously, explore The Medium with ray tracing and DLSS!
