The Assassin(s) Pulls Out of Busan International Film Festival 2026: What Happened and What It Means for Lee Min Ho’s Events

It was set to be one of the most anticipated appearances at this year’s festival. Instead, the team behind The Assassin(s) has stepped back from Busan entirely, citing safety concerns amid ongoing controversy.

The Assassin(s): Overview

What Did the Production Company Say?

Hive Media Corp. announced that it had decided not to take part in the Opening Ceremony or the Outdoor Stage Greeting after careful consideration. The company said the choice was made to ensure the safety of audiences and attendees, and to allow the festival event to proceed smoothly. It also apologised to everyone who had\been looking forward to the appearances and thanked fans for their understanding.

Why Is the Film Under Scrutiny?

The Assassin(s) follows an investigation into the mystery and forces behind the 1974 assassination attempt that shocked South Korea. Since its release on September 23, the film has faced controversy over allegations of historical distortion surrounding certain elements of the story. These are allegations being raised in public debate, and the production company’s statement referred only to reviewing the current situation around the film.

Lee Min Ho’s Event Also Cancelled

Lee Min Ho’s “Actors House” session, originally planned for October 7 at the festival, was cancelled as well. With that, every official festival event linked to the film has now been called off. The outdoor stage greeting had been expected to feature director Hur Jin Ho alongside Yoo Hae Jin, Park Hae Il and Lee Min Ho.

What Happens Next?

The Busan International Film Festival will still go ahead as planned, opening on October 6 and running for ten days. For more updates, browse our Korean film news on TechnoSports and our entertainment coverage.
