Ted Sarandos Explains Why Netflix Brought Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent Onboard

Netflix isn’t just chasing prestige dramas anymore — it’s chasing audiences that already exist. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has opened up about the streamer’s decision to bring Samay Raina’s viral YouTube comedy show, “India’s Got Latent,” onto its platform, calling it a strategic bet on a massive, ready-built fanbase rather than a traditional content commission.

Why Netflix Made This Move

For years, Netflix’s model relied on commissioning original content and then building an audience around it. “India’s Got Latent” flips that formula. Raina had already amassed a loyal following of tens of millions through years of live-streaming and direct fan engagement — audience-building work Netflix didn’t have to do itself. Season 2 now streams simultaneously on both Netflix and YouTube, a first-of-its-kind hybrid release for the platform.

A Bigger Shift in Netflix’s India Strategy

Industry analysts have called the simultaneous release “revolutionary,” since it breaks from Netflix’s long-standing exclusivity model. While Netflix gave up sole streaming rights to “Latent,” it reportedly secured Raina’s upcoming stand-up special as a Netflix exclusive in return — a trade seen as a win given his current popularity.

The show previously ran into controversy during its first season in 2025, after obscene remarks from a guest sparked backlash, legal scrutiny, and a temporary shutdown, with Raina removing all episodes from YouTube. Its return, and now its Netflix partnership, marks a notable comeback for one of India’s biggest creator-led entertainment properties.

For Netflix, the calculation is straightforward: tap into an existing digital fan base, cut marketing costs, and reach viewers who already trust the creator — a growing trend as platforms increasingly partner with creators rather than build audiences from scratch.

Building and sustaining a massive online following takes a real physical toll — the stress of constant content, deadlines, and public scrutiny often shows up in unexpected ways.
