Tata Steel Kapilash Half Marathon 2026: 5,500 Run for Wildlife

Tata Steel’s Kapilash Half Marathon 2026 drew over 5,500 runners to Dhenkanal on January 10, celebrating wildlife protection and honoring freedom fighter Baji Rout’s birth centenary. The third edition featured international participation for the first time.

Tata Steel Marathon: Run to Protect Wildlife Theme

Held at Kapilash Wildlife Sanctuary’s buffer zone, the marathon united runners from 14 Indian states under the theme “Run to Protect Wildlife.” Panchanan Bera from West Bengal won the men’s 21km category, while Haryana’s Bharti Nain claimed the women’s title, sharing ₹9.46 lakh total prize money.

Elina Tarasova from St. Petersburg, Russia marked the event’s first international participant, elevating the marathon’s global profile. The race was organized by Tata Steel in collaboration with District Administration Dhenkanal and Odisha Athletic Association.

Government Support and Wildlife Conservation

Odisha Ministers Krushna Chandra Patra and Suryabanshi Suraj flagged off the event, emphasizing youth fitness and biodiversity protection. Minister Patra specifically highlighted elephant conservation, urging collective action to protect India’s rich wildlife heritage.

According to Tata Steel’s official announcement, the marathon represents “a collective call to protect biodiversity” beyond mere fitness activities. D B Sundara Ramam, VP of Corporate Services, stressed that wildlife protection is “not a choice but a responsibility we owe to future generations.”

The event also honored Amar Shaheed Baji Rout, India’s youngest freedom struggle martyr, during his birth centenary year. This connection between environmental conservation and national pride resonated strongly with participants.

International Standards and Technology Integration

The marathon achieved AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) certification, ensuring global standards. Cutting-edge technology included timing mats, radio frequency chips, split timing systems, tracking cameras, and comprehensive Wi-Fi networks throughout the route.

National-level agencies with extensive marathon experience managed logistics, while Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Dhenkanal students amplified the event across social media platforms, reaching broader audiences.

Corporate Partnership Ecosystem

Multiple industry partners supported the initiative including MGM Minerals, NAVA Ltd, Khemka Refractories, INOX Air Products, Tata 1mg, and several Tata Group companies. This corporate collaboration demonstrates private sector commitment to community wellness and environmental causes.

Sudhir Kumar Mehta, VP of Operations at Tata Steel Meramandali, noted that meaningful environmental change requires communities running together for shared causes—literally and figuratively.

Growing Movement Beyond Fitness

The marathon’s third consecutive successful edition establishes it as an annual fixture promoting dual objectives: public health and wildlife conservation. Tata Steel‘s consistent support alongside Dhenkanal district administration ensures the sustainability of this community initiative.

For sports and environmental enthusiasts, the Kapilash Half Marathon exemplifies how athletic events can drive social awareness. The combination of competitive racing, prize incentives, international participation, and conservation messaging creates a holistic community engagement model.

The 5,500+ participant turnout—up from previous years—signals growing public interest in events that merge personal fitness goals with environmental stewardship. As Tata Steel expands its digital transformation and sustainability commitments, such community initiatives align perfectly with corporate values.

With AIMS certification and international participation, the Kapilash Half Marathon positions itself for continued growth while maintaining focus on protecting the Kapilash Wildlife Sanctuary’s precious ecosystems.
