The trailer wastes no time setting up the emotional core of the film. The trailer starts with Belmont comforting his combat dog, who, like him, is also suffering from PTSD. Belmont then discusses his past with J.K. Simmons’ character.

The trailer also hints at Belmont’s intensity and loyalty. Pitt plays Special Forces officer James Belmont, and, as the trailer takes pains to show us, he’s not the kind of guy you want to mess with. This is a guy who shot another guy in the head because the other guy threw a brick at his dog, Odin. Anyway, the character played by J.K. Simmons thinks this story is a total laugh riot.

The action kicks into high gear with a brutal wildlife encounter. Unfortunately for the pack of wolves James meets after his plane goes down, they miss this story and choose to attack James and Odin, which we’re going to guess doesn’t go especially well for them.

The trailer also flashes back to give Odin a heartbreaking backstory. Fresh off his box office hit The Beekeeper, Ayer returns with a more isolated survival thriller that will surely have audiences rooting very closely for the safety of Pitt’s former soldier and his best friend, a combat dog. The footage flashes back to their time in the military, revealing that the German Shepherd lost his teeth and a leg in battle.

A Big Year for Brad Pitt
