Starlink became the first satellite internet service in South Asia to launch commercially, when it began operations in Bangladesh in May 2025. A year on, its monthly price remains the main barrier to wider adoption.

PlanMonthly PriceApprox. in INR
Residential Lite৳4,200₹3,308
Residential৳6,000₹4,726
BusinessFrom ৳4,600N/A
Hardware kit (one-time)৳47,000N/A

Both home plans offer unlimited data, with speeds of up to 300 Mbps on the Residential plan.

Only Around 5,000 Users After a Year

According to BTRC data, Starlink had just 5,389 customers in Bangladesh as of May 2026, most of them corporate users. BTRC Chairman Major General (Retd.) Md Emdad Ul Bari admitted that “Starlink is an expensive service.”

Why Adoption Is Slow

Bangladesh already has dense, low-cost fibre and mobile internet. Local broadband starts at around ৳400 for 5 Mbps, so Starlink’s home plans cost up to ten times more. Experts say its real market is remote areas where no broadband reaches.

What About India?

Starlink’s India website listed a residential plan at ₹8,600 per month, plus a ₹34,000 hardware kit. That is roughly double the Bangladesh price. The company has said final pricing was not yet announced, and I found no confirmed India launch date.

The Takeaway

Bangladesh’s experience shows that satellite internet only works at scale when the price fits local budgets. India will likely face the same test.
