Sony Just Handed Venom a Symbiote-Sized Second Chance — And the Final Destination Duo Are the Perfect Fit

The live-action Venom trilogy earned $1.8 billion worldwide and still somehow managed to feel like it was always one sequel too many. So what does Sony do when the box office numbers start sliding? It doesn’t recast. It doesn’t reboot. It goes animated. And in the most unexpected creative move of February 2026, the studio has tapped the directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines to reimagine one of Marvel’s most beloved anti-heroes from the ground up.

This is either Sony’s smartest call in years — or the most delightfully chaotic swing they’ve ever taken. Either way, it’s fascinating.

Animated Venom — Everything We Know Right Now

Why This Pairing Makes Sense

Sony Pictures Animation — the division behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse — will produce the picture. Variety That pedigree alone should calm anyone worried about quality. The Spider-Verse films didn’t just win Oscars; they fundamentally changed what people expect from animated comic book storytelling. Giving Venom — a character whose whole identity is chaotic, visceral, and darkly funny — that same animated canvas is, on paper, a brilliant idea.

Lipovsky and Stein are riding serious momentum after Bloodlines broke out as the highest-grossing and best-reviewed entry in the Final Destination franchise. Wikipedia They’ve since attached themselves to a new Gremlins film alongside Chris Columbus, and have projects in development at Columbia, Universal, and Paramount simultaneously. They know how to revive a franchise that’s lost its footing. Venom’s footing was very much lost by The Last Dance.

What About Tom Hardy?

Hardy is understood to be involved in some capacity, though it remains unclear whether he would voice the character or serve as a producer. IMDb Given how closely identified he is with Eddie Brock’s darkly comedic inner monologue, his voice returning would give the animated film an immediate sense of continuity that audiences would respond to warmly. The Bigger Picture

The live-action Venom trilogy made Sony a boat-load of money, but the comparatively disappointing performance of The Last Dance presented a problem — where do you go from here? Disney Animation is the answer, and it’s a smart one. The medium allows for a creative reset without the baggage of recasting or retconning, and the Spider-Verse template proves audiences will embrace a stylistically bold animated take on Spider-Man characters.
