Filmmakers have a habit of asking for the impossible: cinema-grade image quality in a body small enough to carry all day. Sony’s answer is the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera that adds internal RAW recording and, for the first time in the FX series, Open Gate shooting.
What Makes the Sony FX5 Special?
At its heart is a newly developed full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor, which includes a dedicated AI processing unit. In S-Log3, Sony claims 15+ stops of dynamic range, which means smoother roll-off from bright highlights to deep shadows even in high-contrast scenes.
It offers three base ISOs (800, 4000 and 12800) and a Dual Gain Shooting mode, a first for the FX series, aimed at cleaner low-light footage without losing shadow detail. For more camera launches like this, follow Technosports.

Open Gate and Internal RAW: The Big Upgrades
Two features stand out. Open Gate uses the full 3:2 sensor area, giving you extra frame to reframe for different formats, including vertical delivery. Other scan modes (17:9, 16:9 and Super 35mm) are also supported.
The second is in-camera X-OCN, Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, with no external recorder needed. New X-OCN C1 and C2 codecs reduce file sizes, which helps with faster transfers and lighter storage loads. Sony has also planned an update (ver. 2.0, August 2027 or later) to add 240 fps HFR in X-OCN and a vertical shooting interface.
Smarter Autofocus and Colour
AI-based human pose estimation lets the camera track a person’s eyes, body and head, even in dark scenes. Auto Tracing White Balance uses visible light and IR sensors, plus deep learning, for more natural results in shade and indoor lighting. There is also a de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses from 1.3x to 2.0x. If you shoot videos yourself, our camera and creator tech stories are worth a look.
Built for Real-World Shooting
The FX5 has a compact, flat-top body that suits handheld, gimbal and tight-space shooting. Screw holes are placed around the body so you can attach accessories without a cage. A high-efficiency cooling fan in a separate air chamber supports long recording sessions, and the body is dust and moisture resistant.
Other practical details include two USB-C ports with USB PD power, a wired LAN terminal, timecode support and compatibility with the high-capacity NP-SA100 battery. The Monitor & Control app lets you monitor and control the camera from a phone, tablet or Mac.
