Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme is impressively fast — until you put it next to the M5 Pro and M5 Max. Then the picture changes quickly, and it’s not flattering for Qualcomm.

Impressive Chip, Wrong Competition

The Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme features Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon cores in an 18-core configuration, delivering significantly higher single-core and multi-core performance than its predecessor. On paper, it’s a serious leap. The problem is the competition.

Apple‘s M5 Pro scores about 5.2% higher in single-core performance and roughly 21.2% higher in multi-core workloads compared to the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme. The M5 Max extends that lead further, with around 5.8% higher single-core and about 26% better multi-core performance. That’s a decisive margin, not a close race.

What makes it sting more for Qualcomm is the generational context. Even the previous-generation M4 Max slightly surpasses Qualcomm’s new chip in single-core tests and delivers comparable multi-core performance — meaning Apple’s last-gen Pro chip is keeping pace with Qualcomm’s current flagship. For anyone shopping Windows ARM laptops vs MacBook Pro, that’s a sobering data point.

To be fair to Qualcomm, this is only the company’s second-generation chip release leveraging fully custom CPU cores for laptops, whereas Apple has been on this path for years. The trajectory is encouraging — a 2.43x GPU improvement over the first-gen X Elite is genuinely impressive. But right now, the M5 Pro and M5 Max are in a different league, and the numbers make that hard to argue with.

The real test will come when Snapdragon X2 laptops from ASUS, Lenovo, and HP ship with final drivers and optimised software — early benchmarks on beta firmware rarely tell the whole story.

FAQs

Does the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme beat Apple M5 in any benchmarks?

It leads in multi-core tasks like Blender and Handbrake rendering, but trails significantly against the M5 Pro and M5 Max overall.

Is the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme worth buying over a MacBook Pro?

For Windows users it’s compelling, but on raw performance the M5 Pro and M5 Max currently hold a clear advantage.
