“Made In India” smartphones have witnessed a 7% increase in shipments in the first quarter of 2022 as per reports. India’s local smartphone manufacturing ecosystem was more or less the same without any drastic changes despite component shortages. The credit for growth goes to the rise in demand for phones and exports as well.

The “Make In India” scheme has been increasing smartphone outputs since its inception:

Counterpoint Research states that the GoI’s ‘Made in India’ smartphone shipments went up to 7% year-over-year in Q1 of 2022 and reached 48 million units. Oppo led the charge with nearly 10.36 million shipments which led it to get a market share of 21.6%.

The report also adds that Samsung is right behind Oppo with 10.22 million manufactured units and a market share of 21.3%. Third-party electronic manufacturing services managed to maintain a 42% stake in local manufacturing which is a 4% increase year-over-year in terms of shipments. Bharat FIH was the largest EMS provider in the first quarter of 2022 with a share of 11.3% in shipments.

Dixon Technologies clocked in second with an 8.6% share. An increase in demand and exports have led to this growth. “The government’s focus has been to make India a manufacturing hub. It has taken a lot of initiatives in this direction. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile handsets proved to be an accelerator for local manufacturing,” research analyst Priya Joseph stated.

“Similar PLI schemes have been introduced by the government in other strategic sectors, such as solar, semiconductors, automotive and electronic products. In the current times of uncertainties triggered by the pandemic, war, and other factors, the government feels it is important to have a resilient economy that can sustain such shocks,” she concludes.
