Sony’s announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro on September sparked considerable discussion. With a price tag of $700/£700/€800, the PS5 Pro seems to cater primarily to existing PlayStation 5 owners looking for an upgrade.

The system boasts several notable improvements over the original PS5, such as 67% more GPU compute units, faster memory, and better ray tracing capabilities. However, with these enhancements comes a steep price, pushing the console into a price range that competes directly with gaming PCs.

This leads to an important question for gamers: Should you invest in the PS5 Pro or build a gaming PC? Let’s examine the benefits of each choice to guide your decision.

Why You Might Consider Assembling a Gaming PC

1. Comparable Price, More Value

While the PS5 Pro may seem like a good deal for its price, you can build a powerful gaming PC for the same amount of money—around $700 to $1,000. If you’re willing to put in the time to build your own system, you can get a high-performing rig without spending thousands.

Even pre-built gaming PCs within this price range are often discounted and come with quality components. In addition to gaming, a PC is a multifunctional device that can handle productivity tasks, creative projects, and more, making it a more versatile investment.

2. Upgradeability

Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons to build a gaming PC is upgradeability. With a console like the PS5 Pro, you’re locked into the hardware it comes with. While it might perform well initially, it will eventually fall behind as newer technology emerges.

In contrast, a gaming PC allows you to upgrade individual components like the GPU, CPU, memory, or storage, ensuring that your system stays relevant for years. If you’re looking to improve graphics performance or expand storage for new games, a PC provides the flexibility to upgrade over time without requiring a full system replacement.

3. Access to a Vast Library of Games

A significant advantage of PC gaming is the vast selection of games on offer. When you buy a PS5 Pro, you’re largely tied to Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) and the PlayStation Store. Even if you opt for physical games, you’ll need to pay extra for a disc drive to play them, which isn’t included in the PS5 Pro’s base price.

PC gaming, on the other hand, operates on platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and others that offer endless options. You’ll find frequent sales, digital key discounts, and even free games, giving PC gamers far more flexibility and affordability when it comes to building a library. If you’re patient, many PlayStation exclusives eventually make their way to PC, meaning you’ll have access to them without investing in a console.

Why You Might Stick with the PS5 Pro

1. Exclusive Titles on Day One

Sony’s exclusive games remain a strong reason for sticking with a PlayStation console. While many PlayStation titles eventually come to PC, there’s usually a significant delay.

If you’re eager to play the latest exclusives as soon as they’re released—such as Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, or the next Spider-Man title—a PlayStation is the way to go. For gamers who prioritize access to exclusive titles over long-term value, the PS5 Pro can be a more compelling choice.

2. The Social Factor: PlayStation Network

For many gamers, social connections are an integral part of the gaming experience. If all your friends are already on PlayStation, switching to a PC can feel isolating, especially since not all games support crossplay between platforms.

PlayStation’s ecosystem is designed for group gaming, and while PC does offer multiplayer experiences, your friends might not want to make the jump from console to PC. The PlayStation Network also simplifies online gaming, offering an all-in-one solution for connecting with friends.

3. Convenience and Availability

Building a gaming PC can be a rewarding project, but it’s not for everyone. Sourcing parts can be challenging, especially if you live in regions where PC components are hard to find or must be imported. This not only increases costs but also complicates the process of upgrading over time.

The PS5 Pro offers a simple, ready-to-go solution. Once you purchase the console, you’re set for several years without having to worry about upgrading hardware or troubleshooting compatibility issues.

Final Thoughts: PS5 Pro vs. Gaming PC

Deciding between the PS5 Pro and a gaming PC ultimately depends on your individual priorities. If you’re looking for a versatile, upgradeable system that saves you money on games and online fees, a gaming PC is the smarter investment. It offers more value in terms of performance, upgradeability, and access to a vast library of games.

However, if you’re committed to the PlayStation ecosystem, enjoy the convenience of console gaming, and value exclusive titles and social connections, the PS5 Pro is still a solid choice, despite its higher price. Ultimately, the decision comes down to your gaming preferences, social circle, and how much flexibility you want from your gaming hardware.
