Sergio Ramos turns 35: A look back at one of the greatest defenders

Sergio Ramos turned 35 years old today, and the player has been one of the best centre-backs of the last decade, winning every trophy available to them at least once. And owing to his success at Madrid, we look back at his accomplishments and also briefly discuss his future.

Having joined Real Madrid from Sevilla in 2005, Ramos established himself as a regular in the team shortly after his arrival, and he has been with Los Blancos ever since. He first won two consecutive La Liga titles in 2006/07 and in 2007/08 with Madrid, and also won the 2008 & 2012 European Championships with Spain.

Ramos has won 5 La Liga trophies, 2 Copa del Reys, 4 Spanish Super Cups and Club World Cups and 3 UEFA Super Cups. However, his greatest achievement at Real Madrid that stands out above all else is the hat-trick of Champions League trophies secured from 2015 to 2018.

Playing and captaining Spain, Ramos reached the pinnacle of footballing achievements when he helped his country lift the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and that was only the beginning of the brightest spell of his career.

Ramos’ versatility makes him a threat going forward as well, and he is the 19th highest goalscorer in Real Madrid history, with 101 goals to his name. Narrowing the list down to only defenders makes him the second-highest goalscoring defender of all time in Madrid history.

While his aggressive approach to defending might not flatter everyone, it does get the job done, and that is what truly matters at the end of the day.

The newly aged 35-year-old is yet to agree on a new deal with Real Madrid and could be on his way out of the club this summer due to the expiry of his contract.
