Scarlett Johansson Says Endgame “Shouldn’t Work,” and Somehow Still Wins

It’s not every day an actor calls one of the biggest movies ever made a film that probably shouldn’t have worked. But that’s what Scarlett Johansson said, with a smile, as Avengers: Endgame climbed back to the top of the box office.

What Scarlett Johansson Said?

According to The Direct, Johansson was speaking to Metro at the London premiere of her upcoming film Paper Tiger when she was asked about Endgame reclaiming its crown. She called it a fantastic film and recalled being amazed at how emotional it was the first time she saw it. In her words, it’s a movie that shouldn’t work, but somehow does. She added that she loved making it.

Her point, as The Direct reads it, is about scale. No studio had ever told one story across so many characters and franchises, so pulling it off was a real achievement.

Endgame’s Comeback by the Numbers

*The source article lists the total as “$2.94 million,” which looks like a typo for billion.

Where Johansson Is Now?

Johansson is sitting out Avengers: Doomsday. Instead, she’s heading to DC. The article says she’s playing a top-secret role in The Batman: Part II, set for release on February 18, 2028. Production on that film is reportedly paused and expected to continue into 2027.

Could Black Widow Return?

The Direct says it’s almost certain she won’t return in Doomsday, even as a multiversal variant. Some fans are hoping for a cameo in Secret Wars, but the Batman schedule may get in the way.

There’s also a long-running mystery. After Black Widow, Johansson was reported to be producing an upcoming Marvel project behind the scenes. As of November 2023 it was still in development, and fans have heard little since. Many assume it was tied to Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who took up the Black Widow mantle. The article suggests it may have simply been Thunderbolts*, though that’s speculation.

Ultimately, the writer argues that Marvel may be best leaving Natasha Romanoff in the past. Yelena has been an instant fan favourite, and her story is expected to continue into Phase 7.

Why It Matters?

Hearing a cast member admit the odds were long makes the film’s success feel more human. Avengers: Endgame came together after a decade of storytelling, and Johansson’s comment is a reminder that even the people inside it were surprised by how well it landed.

Conclusion

There’s something refreshing about a star saying out loud that a blockbuster almost shouldn’t have worked. It also shows why a re-release can still pull in crowds years later. As for Black Widow, a return looks unlikely, but with Marvel, nothing is ever completely off the table.
