Sanjeev Kapoor Rejected MasterChef India Because He Wanted Re 1 More Than Akshay Kumar — And He Has Zero Regrets About It

Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor is many things — culinary icon, TV legend, entrepreneur. But apparently, he is also someone who doesn’t shy away from walking away from a big deal over a single rupee. In a candid conversation on Culinary Culture with food critic Vir Sanghvi, Kapoor revealed the real reason he initially turned down MasterChef India — and it’s one of the most entertainingly principled stands in Indian television history.

The Re 1 Condition That Changed Indian Food TV

When producers first approached Sanjeev Kapoor for MasterChef India Season 1, they had already signed Akshay Kumar as the host. Kapoor’s response? Simple. Pay me Re 1 more than whatever Akshay is getting — or I’m out.

When Vir Sanghvi challenged him on the demand — “What is Re 1?” — Kapoor was unwavering. “One rupee more,” he reiterated. The producers told him it was a very good offer and that Akshay Kumar had already been signed. Kapoor’s reply? He was happy to walk away. He even turned down subsequent requests to appear for just a single episode.

Why He Eventually Said Yes in Season 3

Here’s where the story gets more interesting than just ego. When MasterChef India returned for its third season, producers came back to Kapoor acknowledging that the show wasn’t working. “They came and said they need me,” he recalled. His initial response was that he didn’t think he could do it — but the producers promised to do things his way.

What finally convinced him wasn’t the money. It was the mission.

Around the same time, Kapoor had launched his own channel, Food Food, and was actively working to elevate chefs like Harpal Singh Sokhi to household name status. He saw MasterChef India as a vehicle for the entire food entertainment industry in India.

“If MasterChef fails in this country, we are doomed,” Kapoor said. “That’s why I did it. I still feel anything done in food has to succeed.”

It was a decision rooted not in personal gain, but in protecting an ecosystem he had spent decades building.

The Re 1 — Did He Eventually Get It?

When Sanghvi pressed him on whether he finally received his Re 1 more than everyone else, Kapoor smiled and said they “obviously would have.” He called it a non-negotiable point of principle.

“If I can’t command that, then there’s something wrong with the system.”

In those few words, Kapoor captured something bigger than a salary negotiation — it was about a chef asserting that culinary expertise deserves to be valued on par with, and sometimes above, mainstream celebrity. In a country where Bollywood stars routinely command astronomical fees, a chef demanding Re 1 more than Akshay Kumar is quietly radical.
