Samsung Launches P9 and P7 Portable SSDs in India — USB4 Speed Meets 12K Recording

Samsung’s new flagship portable SSDs promise nearly double the speed of their predecessor, and they’re arriving in India within days.

Portable storage has quietly become a bottleneck for creators shooting high-resolution video and working with massive RAW files. Samsung’s answer arrives this week: the P9 and P7, its first portable SSDs built on USB4, were unveiled at Gamescom 2026 and are now confirmed for India from the first week of September.

What’s New

The headline upgrade is the jump to USB4 connectivity, delivering transfer speeds Samsung says are roughly double its previous-generation T9 drive.

Notably, both drives share the same peak speed rating since they use the identical USB4 interface — the real difference lies in positioning: the P9 targets professional creators, while the P7 is built as the more affordable, rugged everyday option.

Why the P9 Stands Out

The P9 holds a genuine industry first: it’s the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD capable of hitting 4,000MB/s read speeds, an achievement that earned it a CES 2026 Innovation Award earlier this year. That sustained write performance is what enables 12K direct recording — meaning professional videographers can capture massive RAW footage straight to the drive rather than offloading from a camera’s internal card first. Worth noting: these peak speeds only hold over a genuine USB4 or Thunderbolt 4/5 connection — plugging into a standard USB-C port will bottleneck performance significantly.

Full specifications and availability details are on Samsung’s official India newsroom announcement.

Who Should Buy Which

The P9 makes sense for video editors, photographers, and power users regularly moving huge files who’ll actually benefit from sustained 4,000MB/s transfers. The P7, while capable of the same peak speed, is pitched more at everyday users wanting fast, reliable, drop-resistant storage for laptops, consoles, and phones without paying the P9’s premium.

For readers building out a content creation setup, TechnoSports’ recent coverage of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 pricing is a useful reminder that Samsung’s premium hardware across categories has been trending pricier through 2026 — storage included.

Bottom Line

The P9 and P7 push portable storage into genuinely new territory, with speeds that finally match what modern high-resolution content creation demands. The P9 is the one to chase if you shoot 12K or juggle massive RAW libraries; the P7 is the smarter buy for everyone else who just wants USB4 speed without the professional price tag. Both land in India from the first week of September.
