Samsung’s 7-Inch Foldable Display Passes Rigorous MIL-STD 810G Test

Samsung has achieved a notable milestone today, as its 7-inch foldable display, featured in its current-generation devices, has successfully met the rigorous standards of the ‘MIL-STD 810G’ test recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense. This standard, also known as the American ‘Military Specification’ (MilSpec), subjects various components to thorough evaluation and a series of tests to determine their qualification for certification. Although foldable panels are often seen as sturdy, than ones it’s interesting to note that Samsung’s display has achieved this official rating.

More About the Samsung 7-Inch Foldable Display

As per reports from The Elec Samsung sought the expertise of UL Solutions, an organization specializing in practical safety science to evaluate the durability of its 7-inch panel. For the ‘MIL-STD 810G’ certification to be obtained products or components need to pass tests meant to replicate temperature and shock scenarios commonly faced during use or specific outdoor pursuits. An official from Samsung Display shared insights into the testing process carried out on the 7-inch panel.

In the shock test a total of 26 experiments were performed, mimicking scenarios like impacts from a height of 1.22 meters, which matches the usage height of smartphones by their users. The company representative mentioned no issues with the product’s performance during activities. Specifically pointed out the successful completion of the gravity acceleration test, known as one of the most challenging aspects of the MilSpec standard.

With around 1,800 patents filed and registered in the U.S. Samsung’s marketing head Cho Yong Seok highlighted that this number is four times higher than that held by its rivals. The recent certification serves as a confirmation of Samsung’s edge over its competition.

Moreover, the recent MilSpec rating update eliminates a hurdle, for Apple in clarifying why it has been hesitant to explore the idea of introducing an iPhone. Hopefully, once such a product is finally introduced Apple’s underlying motivations will come to light. In the meantime, Samsung deserves recognition for its efforts in pushing the boundaries of foldable smartphone technology and enhancing the durability of its displays.
