Let’s have a look at the key highlights of the upcoming SA20 2024 Player Auction: SA20 2024 Player Auction

Increased Budget and Player Slots

Each of the six participating teams has been allocated a budget purse of 2.1 million USD, an increase from the previous season. With a higher budget in hand, franchises will have more flexibility in acquiring players during the auction. The auction will fill a total of 21 player slots, and each team will have a squad of 19 players for the upcoming season.

Special Focus on Rookie Players

The SA20 2024 season will introduce a special emphasis on nurturing young talent. Six out of the 21 slots available in the auction have been reserved for “rookie players.” A rookie player is defined as any South African player aged 22 years or younger who has not participated in the SA20 before. This move aims to give emerging talents a platform to showcase their skills and contribute to the league’s success.

Minimum and Maximum Player Requirements

To maintain a balance between local and international talent, each team is required to have a minimum of 10 Proteas Players (South African players) in their squad. Moreover, franchises can have a maximum of seven overseas or international players, adding diversity to the squads and providing a global flavor to the tournament.

Defending Champions Retain Core Squad

Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the defending champions, have retained a solid core of players from their championship-winning squad of the previous season. Despite a few notable overseas inclusions, they have only three slots to fill and a purse of R1.865 million available for the auction.

Pretoria Capitals – Most Slots to Fill

Runners-up from the last season, Pretoria Capitals, have the most slots to fill – five in total. They also have the biggest purse available for the auction, with R9.737 million at their disposal. This provides them with significant room for maneuvering and strengthening their squad further.

Youngest Player Signed

Paarl Royals have signed the promising 17-year-old South Africa U19 left-arm quick, Kwena Maphaka, making him the youngest player to be signed in the league.
