After ten episodes of chaos, “Rick and Morty” closed out Season 9 with something the show rarely offers: a genuinely tender ending. The finale, “Field of Dreams,” sends Morty on a solo journey through the multiverse — and the answer to whether he makes it back is more emotional than anyone expected.
Morty spends the episode “funeral hopping” between alternate realities, eventually landing in a universe where his counterpart has just died. This version of the Smith family looks happier, healthier, and free of Rick’s chaos entirely — everything Morty’s own life isn’t. But as the episode unfolds, that perfect illusion starts to crack.

The alternate Rick in this universe — sober for 17 years, teaching physics at MIT — initially represents everything Morty’s own grandfather isn’t. But Morty’s desperation to get home pushes this Rick back toward the very portal technology that destroyed his stability, and the “perfect” family collapses in violent, tragic fashion.
Shaken by what he’s witnessed, Morty finally returns to his own dysfunctional family — and rather than resenting Rick’s chaos, he seems to accept it. Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, following the misadventures of a cynical mad scientist and his anxious grandson as they travel across an infinite number of realities. Season 9 leans hard into that premise’s emotional core, using the finale to argue that no universe offers a flawless life — only different versions of the same mess.
