Rana Daggubati Calls Rajinikanth “An Aspiration” & Defines Success — This Is Pure Gold!

There are interviews, and then there are conversations — the kind that make you pause and think. Rana Daggubati and director Karthik Subbaraj just delivered one of those, sitting down for an exclusive chat ahead of their new Tamil war drama Neelira, releasing April 3, 2026.

Between talking about their film and the bond it took to create it, the duo dropped some genuinely moving words — including a heartfelt tribute to the one and only Rajinikanth.

Rana Daggubati’s Neelira — Everything You Need to Know at a Glance

“Rajinikanth Is an Aspiration” — Rana Daggubati’s Words Hit Different

When asked to give just one word for the legendary Rajinikanth — the superstar who has shaped South Indian cinema for over five decades — Karthik Subbaraj didn’t hesitate for even a second. He called him “Thalaivar.” Simple. Definitive. Rana nodded in complete agreement but then went a step further, saying the Coolie actor holds a singular place in this entire generation’s imagination. According to Rana, Rajinikanth represents style, aspiration, and the idea that anything is possible — and that no single person has had a larger cultural impact on the youth of India than him. That’s not flattery. That’s just truth spoken plainly.

What Does Success Really Mean? Rana’s Answer Is Something to Reflect On

In a film industry where success is so often measured in box office numbers and opening weekend collections, Rana Daggubati offered a refreshingly different perspective. For him and Karthik, success with Neelira would look like this: if audiences are still talking about “the long night” — the emotional core of the film — long after they’ve left the theatre. It’s about leaving a mark on people’s hearts, not just the charts. You can explore more such thought-provoking takes from Indian cinema at Technosports.

The Legacy Angle — Rana on Growing Up in a Film Family

Rana also opened up about carrying the weight of a legendary film legacy, being the son of producer D. Suresh Babu. He said the knowledge passed down across generations is something he could never have built on his own — and that giving back to cinema is the only purpose that makes sense to him.

It’s rare to hear a star speak with this kind of humility. And it makes Neelira — a story about war, loss, and a child’s world turned upside down — feel even more personal.
