Raja Shivaji Creates History: Riteish Deshmukh’s Epic Becomes the First Marathi Film Ever to Cross Rs 100 Crore in India

It’s a moment Marathi cinema has been chasing for years. On its third Tuesday, Raja Shivaji quietly walked into the history books — becoming the first-ever Marathi film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the Indian box office. And it did so with grace, collecting steadily week after week rather than burning bright and fading fast.

A Record That Belonged to No One — Until Now

For decades, Marathi cinema has punched above its weight creatively, producing films that resonated deeply with Maharashtra’s passionate audience. Yet the Rs 100 crore barrier remained unbroken. Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva both came agonisingly close — riding enormous grassroots love — but neither could crack the milestone in their full theatrical runs.

Raja Shivaji changed that on May 20, 2026. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the film’s geographical spread. While Sairat and Baipan Bhari Deva earned their collections almost entirely from Maharashtra, a significant portion of Raja Shivaji‘s Rs 100 crore has come from outside the state — proving genuine pan-India appeal for a Marathi film, possibly for the first time at this scale.

What This Means for Riteish Deshmukh and Marathi Cinema

Riteish Deshmukh, who has long championed Marathi cinema alongside his Bollywood career, now has back-to-back clean hits to his name in the regional space. Raja Shivaji is not just a personal triumph — it’s a signal to the industry that Marathi films, when made with ambition and the right subject, can compete at a national level.

That said, the film’s Maharashtra-specific numbers will likely fall short of the state records set by Hindi productions like Tanhaji and Chhaava — both of which performed extraordinarily within the state. Raja Shivaji won’t approach their Maharashtra numbers. But on a national gross basis, it stands tallest in Marathi cinema’s history.

The film still has legs. With strong holds into Week 3, a final lifetime between Rs 110–115 crore looks well within reach.
