A seasoned Test specialist recently turned his attention to the future, spotlighting 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after his explosive IPL 2026 performance. While the youngster’s been lighting up the T20 stage, this veteran batter is convinced his raw talent and fearless approach deserve a serious pathway into red-ball cricket—something we’ve explored in our recent piece on how BCCI’s grassroots cricket efforts uncover these rare talents.

Rajasthan Royals’ Tactical Chase Against Punjab Kings

Rajasthan Royals pulled off an impressive chase against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, hunting down 223 runs. They set the tone early, racing to 84/1 in just six overs during the Powerplay.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the driving force behind that explosive start. He battered the bowling attack, smashing 43 runs off just 16 balls with five massive sixes and three boundaries. His aggressive yet calculated assault kept the required run rate within reach as the Royals coasted to a six-wicket victory. Pujara, worth noting, deserves more credit than most headlines suggest.

Balancing White-Ball Brilliance and Red-Ball Foundations

Here’s the real challenge: how do you develop such exceptional talent for Test cricket’s demands? Cheteshwar made a compelling case that while T20 specialization fits the modern game, India needs to dedicate 25-30 domestic players to serious red-ball training at the National Cricket Academy.

He pointed to successful IPL bowlers like Yuzvendra Chahal—who took 3/36 in this match, dismissing Jaiswal, Jurel, and Parag—and noted they thrive because they’ve mastered line and length fundamentals. Teaching young stars like Sooryavanshi these red-ball basics early means they won’t abandon their technique while chasing T20 success. Pujara’s role in this conversation, specifically, runs deeper than most coverage reveals.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Pure Cinema and Fearless Intent

The veteran didn’t mince words praising the teenager, calling his batting “pure cinema” and an absolute onslaught against top-tier bowlers. What’s striking is how Sooryavanshi adapted his approach despite his age—proving he’s not just swinging wildly but executing fearless, tactical choices. Pairing him with a stabilizer like Yashasvi Jaiswal created the “yin-yang” balance the Royals needed to control their chase. ESPN Cricinfo has noted that such partnerships prove essential when teams are building big totals or executing high-pressure chases in competitive tournaments like IPL 2026.

Expert Perspectives on Future Pathways

The veteran believes young stars shouldn’t dodge red-ball cricket’s challenges—it’s still the truest test of character and skill. He’s pushing for a dedicated two-year NCA program to help identified prospects strengthen their defensive technique.

The bigger picture? Bridge the gap between T20 stardom and Test readiness. For anyone tracking Pujara’s perspective, this distinction matters.
