If Penelope Featherington has been your favourite part of Bridgerton, brace yourself. Nicola Coughlan has officially confirmed she appears significantly less in Season 5 — and she said so herself in the most refreshingly candid way possible.

Speaking on the Dish Podcast on April 29, 2026, Coughlan was upfront: filming had already begun before her schedule was finalised, meaning her involvement this time around is genuinely minimal. Far from being upset about it though, she sounds almost relieved.

A Quick Look at Penelope’s Bridgerton Journey

Season	Penelope’s Role	Key Storyline
Season 1 & 2	Recurring	Background schemer, secret Whistledown
Season 3	Lead (with Luke Newton)	Colin & Penelope romance, Whistledown revealed
Season 4	Regular	Whistledown as political tool for Queen Charlotte
Season 5	Reduced / cameo	Steps back; a new Lady Whistledown emerges

Why Is Penelope’s Role So Small This Time?

After four seasons of carrying some of the show’s biggest secrets and storylines, Penelope’s arc reached its natural resting point at the end of Season 4. She walked away from the Lady Whistledown persona after seeing the real damage it caused — only for a mysterious new figure to pick up the pen in the season finale.

With Season 5 now centred on a fresh Bridgerton sibling’s love story, Coughlan’s reduced screen time makes narrative sense. But what makes this story truly charming is how she describes it. Popping on set for a few days, hugging the crew, and leaving while everyone else grinds through eight months of filming? Honestly, that sounds like a dream.

The show’s pattern here isn’t new either. Kate (Simone Ashley) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) went from leads in Season 2 to a cameo as new parents in Season 4. Bridgerton has always been a rotating ensemble, and that’s precisely what keeps it fresh.

The Big Mystery: Who Is the New Lady Whistledown?

This is the question on every fan’s lips — and showrunner Jessica Brownell is deliberately keeping it locked away. Unlike Penelope’s identity, which book readers already knew, this new Whistledown is a completely original creation, unique to the show.

Here’s the twist: Brownell has confirmed the reveal won’t even happen in Season 5. The mystery is being stretched across multiple seasons, with clues planted carefully for eagle-eyed viewers to theorise over. It’s a bold storytelling gamble — and a smart one.

Is Nicola Coughlan Done With Bridgerton?

Not even close. Coughlan has been clear that she’s always happy to return whenever Penelope is needed. With the show potentially running for all eight seasons (covering every Julia Quinn novel), plus the possibility of spin-offs, Penelope Featherington isn’t disappearing — she’s just taking a well-earned breather.

And honestly? After leading one of Netflix’s biggest shows through a full romantic arc — eight months of filming, six months of global press tours — who could blame her for enjoying the lighter schedule.
