PV Sindhu wins historic silver in Asian games 2018

0

PV Sindhu has gone where no Indian badminton player has ever been before. It’s the first time that India has won a medal other than bronze in badminton at the Asian games.
Sindhu has already tasted defeat in the final of two major events this year – at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast (to Saina) and World Championships in Nanjing (to Spain’s Carolina Marin).

Sindhu, Rio Olympics silver medallist, had also lost the finals at India Open (to Beiwen Zhang) and Thailand Open (to Nozomi Okuhara) this year.

The last Indian to win a medal in an individual event was Syed Modi grabbing a bronze medal at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi. It is also the first time that India have won two individual medals at the Asian Games with Saina Nehwal clinching bronze medal on Monday. She was beaten by Tai in the semifinals.

Pique wants Pogba to join Barcelona from Manchester United

Gerard Pique has revealed he wants Paul Pogba to sign for Barcelona – in a stunning interview with the Express.

Paul Pogba’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain. And Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has suggested he could move to Camp Nou.  He said Barcelona would be happy to have Paul Pogba as speculation over the Manchester United midfielder’s future continues.

Pique is due to take on former team-mate Neymar in a charity tournament at PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona. But in a candid interview before the event started, Pique waded in to discuss the ongoing furore around Pogba. The 25-year-old is still at the top of Barcelona’s wanted list. Pique has revealed he is desperate for the midfielder to join as his war with boss Jose Mourinho rages on.

Jose Mourinho denied a rift with Pogba. After the France international suggested he could not give his honest opinion on club matters without being fined. And although Barcelona’s head coach Ernesto Valverde has refused to discuss the prospect of signing the 25-year-old, former United defender Pique has opened the door.

Asked directly about Pogba’s saga, Pique admitted: “I know very little about what’s happening there [with Pogba and Mourinho]. It’s very private between them, their relationship. What I know is Pogba is a great player and he plays for Manchester United right now. We will see in the future if he wants to change clubs. We will be happy to have him here, obviously as we want the best players to be at Barcelona. ” he revealed.

“But we respect Manchester United because it’s his club. Until he says something or the club says something, he’s a Manchester United player.” Pique added.

Neeraj Chopra wins the first javelin gold medal for India in the Asian Games history

India’s Neeraj Chopra today created history by winning a gold medal. He threw the javelin to a distance of 88.06 metres at the Asian Games 2018.

Neeraj Chopra won gold in the men’s javelin throw event at the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games in Indonesia. Chopra looked confident from the start with a throw of 83.46 m. But it was in his third attempt that he stole the show with a monstrous 88.06m to win the gold medal. And with it he broke the national record. His second throw was declined by the officials. But that did not deter the 20-year-old from throwing 83.25m and 86.26m in his fourth and fifth attempt respectively.

This is India’s second gold medal in athletics and eighth overall. This is India’s 41st medal at the Asian Games this year. India now have 8 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze.

Chopra has been in fine form coming into the 18th edition of the Asian Games. He was named the flag bearer of the nation as well. The throw was also his personal best, overshadowing his previous best distance of 87.43 metres at the IAAF Diamond League in Doha.

This was also India’s first-ever gold medal in javelin throw at the Asian Games. And the first medal in the sport since 1982, where India bagged bronze.

PV Sindhu becomes the first Indian shuttler to reach the badminton final at the Asian Games

PV Sindhu has broken one more record for India as she progresses to the finals of women’s singles Badminton event in Asian Games 2018.

This is a historic moment for India and PV Sindhu as well. PV Sindhu cruises to the finals of the Asian Games with a 21-17, 15-21 and 21-10 win over world number 2 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.

PV Sindhu  won the Silver medal in 2016 Olympics and at the recently concluded World Championship as well. She crushed Japans world number 2 Akane Yamaguchi 21-17 in the first game. But fell short in the second game losing it 21-15 to Yamaguchi to take the match to the decider game. In the final game, Sindhu took a clear first break lead by 11-7. And then totally dominated Yamaguchi playing cross court game and tiring the Japanese opponent. Sindhu had a 10 match point opportunity which she got it with a smash on the backhand of Yamaguchi, winning the final game by 21-10.
India, are currently placed seventh in the medal tally which is led by China. The Indian contingent has accumulated a total of 37 medals so far. It includes 7 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze.

Saina Nehwal wins bronze and becomes first female shuttler from India to bag medal at Asian Games in individual event

Saina Nehwal ended her campaign at the ongoing Asian Games with a bronze for India in women’s singles after losing to world No 1 Tai Tzu Ying 21-17, 21-14 in the semi-finals on Monday. But despite the loss, Saina had created history for Indian badminton.

Tzu Ying began well, racing to a 4-1 lead in the opening game. Saina changed her strategy to level the game at 8-8. But constant smashes by the Chinese Taipei shuttler on Saina’s backhand gave her mid-game interval lead by a point.
Tzu Ying then took four straight points to take a good lead and win the game. The loss continues Nehwal’s dismal run against the World No 1 who has beaten Saina 10 straight times now.

What makes Saina’s medal historic is the fact that no female Indian shuttler had won a medal at the Asian Games 2018 prior to this edition. PV Sindhu, who has also made it to the semi-finals, has also assured India of another medal.

Chinese Taipei’s top seed accelerated in the last few minutes to snuff out the Indian’s chances soon after she had taken a slender lead.

India also won a medal at the Asian Games in badminton’s individual event after 36 years. In 1982, it was the legendary Syed Modi won returned with a medal from Asiad. In total, India has won eight medals in badminton in Asian Games 2018 out of which six came in team events.

Tajinderpal wins gold for India in Shot Put at the Asian Games, despite his father battling cancer

Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched the men’s shot put gold with a record-shattering throw. He opened India’s medal account in athletics at the 18th Asian Games.

It was not easy to leave behind his father, battling cancer in a Punjab hospital. But Tajinderpal Singh Toor remained strong in pursuit of his passion. And all the sacrifices made, paid off on Saturday with an Asian Games gold medal in shot put.

Not only the 23-year-old from Moga won a gold, it came with a new Games record. He threw the iron ball to 20.75 m in his fifth attempt. It bettered a six-year old mark, set by Om Prakash Karhana (20.69m). Tajinderpal said he did not think of winning gold and his target was to breach the 21m mark. China’s Liu Yang took the silver with a best throw of 19.52 m while Ivan Ivanov of Kazakhstan won the bronze with 19.40 m.

“I had just one aim in mind. I wanted to clear 21 metre and did not think of gold. But I am happy with this. I was trying hard to break the national record for the last 2-3 years and it happened today, that too with a Meet record. ” Tajinderpal said after winning gold.

Tajinderpal said the feat means a lot to him and his family. “This medal is my biggest achievement because a lot of sacrifices have been made. For the last two years, my father (Karam Singh) has been battling with cancer. My family though never let me get distracted. They allowed me to chase my dream. A lot of sacrifices have been made by my family and friends and all those have paid today. My family never pressurized to attend my father in hospital. And it was always my friends who took care of all the hospital formalities in my absence. I have not gone home much in this period since I was training in Dharamsala. ” the burly athlete, who trains with MS Dhillon, said.

“Now I will meet my dad but I will be there for only two days. I have to get ready for the next challenge. My coach M S Dhillon also needs to be credited for the hard work put in by him,” Tajinderpal added.
