Oppo Reno 6 5G review: A true 5G camera focussed everyday smartphone

Oppo recently launched the next instalment of their Reno series of camera smartphones last month in the form of Oppo Reno 6 and Reno 6 Pro. Both of them are powered by the latest Dimesity SoCs and is true 5G smartphones as they sport up to 13 bands of 5G.

These are premium camera-centric smartphones with great specs that define premiumness from top to bottom. If you love premium looking smartphones, then the Oppo Reno 6 5G is a perfect option for you as Oppo has given a lot of care in tinkling with the finer details of the smartphone.

Now, I did purchase the Oppo Reno 6 5G, and it was a tough choice over the Poco F3 GT and OnePlus Nord 2, but having used it for some days now, I can say to you that the investment was worthwhile. Also, even though it’s priced at 29,990 INR, the Reno 6 can be bought with exchange offers that give you an extra Rs.3000 off on exchange and then you have up to Rs.3,000 cashback with HDFC Bank transactions and Bajaj Finserv and 15% instant cashback with Paytm.

So, if you use all of the offers, you can get a good amount of discount, and having done so, exchanging one of my old phones, the Oppo Reno 6 5G, cost me around Rs.20k, which for the price is a great deal! Before diving into the review, let’s talk about specs:

Specifications

The Oppo Reno 6 5G features a 6.43″ FHD+ AMOLED display along with a 90Hz refresh rate with a 180Hz touch sampling. It is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, paired with 8GB RAM+128GB storage and runs on Android 11 out-of-the-box (ColorOS 11.3).

The Reno 6 will have a triple-camera setup with a 64MP main sensor along with an 8MP ultrawide sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. It will come with a 32MP selfie shooter and will have a 4,300mAh battery with support for 65W fast charging.

Design & Build

This is really a premium smartphone that comes in two different colours: Aurora and Stellar Black, the Aurora colour is an interesting choice for me as it looks great and it plays around with the light. Oppo has used glass to make up the back, but it doesn’t accumulate fingerprints; the special effect due to the design is an Oppo exclusive.

Now, the main thing I like is the design of the smartphone; a boxier design makes it look interesting and reminds me of an iPhone. It is easier to hold and weighs lighter than a lot of smartphones, so the in-hand feel is excellent; carrying it around is very easy, and that boxier design does really help as you do not have sharp edges.

Display

Oppo did embed a good 6.43-inch Full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels resolution) flat AMOLED display, and its quality is excellent. Though it is limited to a 90Hz refresh rate, the peak brightness goes up to 750 nits with an 88.3% screen-to-body ratio. It has an interesting 20:9 aspect ratio and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The display is perfect for everyday use, and as it’s an AMOLED display, you have an Always-On display option with a lot of customisation options with ColorOS 11.3. It is an efficient display with eye-comfort features and features to enhance SDR to HDR content.

So, watching YouTube videos or Netflix is totally a great deal with punchier colours and deep blacks, as it is easier to hold, watching something holding the smartphone is a lot easier. It has a Widevine L1 license; however, it lacks HDR support on Netflix but overall, for using it outdoors or even indoors, you have a nice display.

Performance

It is the first smartphone to come with the new MediaTek Dimesity 900 chipset and so has good performance for everyday usage as well as gaming. The 6 nm chipset is really efficient, and so while providing good battery life, it doesn’t sacrifice performance.

The Mali-G78 MC4 here is also a very capable GPU, and certainly, as a total package, this is a good mid-range SoC. In Geekbench, the Oppo Reno 6 5G scores 708 points in the single-core test and 2093 points in the multi-core test, while in Antutu, the phone got a healthy score of 4,24,779 points.

Certainly for daily usage, the smartphone performs really well, coupled with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. Even if you play heavy games like Battlegrounds Mobile India or Asphalt, you will face no issues at all at high settings.

Camera

This is a camera-centric smartphone, and again Oppo has stuffed it with a lot of features that cannot be covered in one article. It comes with a triple-camera setup, and the 64MP main sensor has an f/1.7 aperture that helps to capture more light and blur background easily.

So, be it daylight or night, the Oppo Reno 6 5G produces crisp images with details even without using the 64MP camera mode. The colours of the photos look vibrant, and you have natural bokeh going on even when you use it for capturing selfies.

The selfies also look really good with proper details, while the macro shots are as good as you see on a flagship smartphone. Then you have a lot of video modes, features like Dual-View video, Text Scanner, Movie, Expert, Slo-Mo, Time Lapse and much more.

Audio, Earpiece & Microphone

Though there’s no stereo speakers, the single speaker has given here is quite loud for daily usage, so be it for listening to music or watching movies, it is a good experience overall. With Dolby Atmos baked into it, the audio output is also good on earbuds or headphones.

Coming to the earpiece, using the Oppo Reno 6 5G for long calls, I faced no issues, and the earpiece is adequately loud. Also, the quality of the microphone is outstanding, and I had no problem using it for long hours or even while playing games with the group.

The haptics on this smartphone is quite good, and though it’s not the best but better than a lot of them in this price tag.

Connectivity

For connectivity, Oppo has given the smartphone all the options you could ask for with a large number of 5G bands on dual SIMs. Then you have both Wi-Fi 6 & Bluetooth v5.2 support that is really good to see Oppo giving the latest connectivity features.

The only USB Type-C port here is good for fast charging and transferring files, but much like other new premium phones, you do not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but Oppo has given a Type-C based earphone in-the-box.

Also, at this budget, I am happy to see Oppo giving this smartphone NFC support, which is again a rare feature for the price.

OS

The Android 11 based ColorOS 11.3 is more like the same OS you see on any Oppo or Realme smartphone, which replicates the near-stock Android experience but with some extra functionalities. Overall, the OS is cool enough to use every day, and you get some pre-loaded bloatware but it can be removed easily.

Battery Life & Charging

The Oppo Reno 6 5G packs a modest 4,300mAh battery, which in 2021 might sound not convincing enough, but from such a light phone, you cannot expect a huge battery. However, I was surprised with the battery life of the smartphone; thanks to the efficient 6nm Dimensity chipset, you comfortably get all-day battery life.

Then you have Oppo’s signature SuperVOOC 2.0 65W fast charging support that really helps if you are a busy user, it charges the smartphone completely within half an hour.

  • Functional & efficient Dimesity 900 chipset
  • Great design with good in-hand feel for daily usage
  • The cameras are excellent with lot of cool features
  • Fast Charging and latest connectivity options

  • Should have featured stereo speakers for the price
  • Lacks 3.5mm headphone jack but has a Type-C earphone
  • ColorOS with some bloatware

Verdict

The Oppo Reno 6 5G is a true functional 5G smartphone that looks good, feels premium and has superb cameras. So, if you are willing to spend a bit extra for a nice-looking smartphone with a 5G-proof future, then this smartphone is for you.

Though targeted more towards the offline market, when bought online, you have a lot of deals and exchange offers that effectively reduces the asking Rs.30k price. It is not a flagship-killer or high price-to-performance smartphone; it is unique in its own way and caters for the need of a specific genre of people.

It has that Oppo premiumness, great cameras and now with MediaTek Dimensity chips are powerful for long usage. So, if this smartphone caters to your requirements and you need a good smartphone for everyday usage, the Oppo Reno 6 5G is a true 5G smartphone for everyone.
