OpenAI’s First Hardware Isn’t a Speaker—It’s a $230 Keyboard

OpenAI just entered the hardware business, and it’s not the sci-fi gadget everyone expected. OpenAI opened orders for Codex Micro — a limited-edition desktop keypad that lets power users monitor and control their AI agents. No screens, no robotics — just a tiny, glowing control board sitting next to your regular keyboard. For more breakdowns of the latest AI product launches, check out TechnoSports’ technology section. What Exactly Is the Codex Micro?

It’s a keypad created in collaboration with keyboard maker Work Louder, specifically for controlling OpenAI’s agentic coding feature Codex. The small, square-shaped pad is officially called the kbd-1.0-codex-micro, and has 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary dial, and a joystick. The keys are customizable and include a push-to-talk option as well as a dial to adjust the reasoning setting. Engadget + 2

OpenAI: Overview

Why It Matters

The Codex keyboard hints at something bigger — a physical controller for coding agents at work and a screen-free AI companion for the home both signal AI moving off our screens and into hardware. Interestingly, the launch comes just as Bloomberg reported OpenAI may be building a screenless smart speaker in partnership with OpenAI’s hardware team led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive — a device expected much later this year.

There’s drama brewing too: Apple recently sued OpenAI, accusing its senior leadership of extracting confidential information and using it in developing its own hardware device, which OpenAI has denied. TechCrunch

For now, though, developers get a tactile, blinking-light way to babysit their AI agents — proof that even in the agentic era, some people still want a physical button to push. Catch more AI and gadget news updates on TechnoSports.
