What Is The Last Ship About?

When a global pandemic wipes out eighty percent of the planet’s population, the crew of a lone naval destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction. Their mission is simple: Find a cure. Stop the virus. Save the world.

The show ran for five tense, action-packed seasons on TNT, following Captain Tom Chandler and the crew of the USS Nathan James as they battled enemies both human and biological. By Season 5, the world is finally recovering from the deadly virus, but global political unrest still remains — and the Nathan James must fight to prevent invasion by Latin America and the next world war.

The Last Ship is based on the 1988 novel by William Brinkley and was executive produced by Michael Bay, giving it the kind of high-octane visual energy that made it one of cable TV’s most kinetic action dramas of its era.

Why This Moment Matters

Following the emotional release of his posthumous documentary interview, Famous Last Words, fans of the late Eric Dane will soon have another way to celebrate his television legacy. Dane’s portrayal of Captain Chandler — stoic, principled, and relentlessly compelling — remains one of the standout performances in American action television, and this Netflix arrival gives an entirely new audience the chance to discover it.

The Last Ship is the latest high-profile licensed addition to Netflix, giving subscribers a massive 5-season, 56-episode binge to kick off summer 2026 — one of several major library pickups throughout June, alongside the hit Hulu comedy Shrill and classic and newer episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head. A Word of Caution for New Fans

The world of streaming licensing is a constantly revolving door. While all five seasons of The Last Ship are coming to Netflix, these additions typically stay for only a year or two before departing. Don’t wait too long to start your binge. What’s on Netflix
