In 2002, the oil tanker Prestige broke in two off the Galician coast, and a huge oil slick spread across its beaches. Netflix is now turning that event into a Spanish drama called Chapapote, and cameras are officially rolling on the Galician coast. The story takes an unusual angle, which makes it one to watch.

Chapapote: Overview

Detail	Info
Title	Chapapote
Type	Spanish Netflix Original film
Status	Filming underway
Director	Daniel Sánchez Arévalo
Idea by	Ramón Campos
Cast	Tamar Novas, Carlos Blanco, María Vázquez, Fer Fraga
Special appearance	Antonio Durán “Morris”
Release	Not announced (expected second half of 2027)

What Is the Plot?

According to Netflix, the Prestige splits apart in 2002 and oil covers the region’s beaches, all except one, the beach in the small town of Agarimo. That should be good news, but it isn’t. Residents can’t go out fishing, they get no aid, and none of the thousands of volunteers heading to neighboring towns come their way.

With businesses empty and the future bleak, the townspeople come up with an outlandish and desperate idea: if the oil won’t reach their beach, they’ll bring it there themselves. It’s a premise that blends dark humor, community spirit and real-world tragedy.

Meet the Cast and Crew

Tamar Novas leads a lineup of familiar Netflix faces. He has appeared in eight Netflix originals, including High Seas and Gangs of Galicia. Carlos Blanco, María Vázquez and Fer Fraga have also appeared in Netflix titles, and Antonio Durán “Morris” makes a special appearance.

Behind the camera, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo (Collision Course) directs and co-writes with Ramón Campos (The Asunta Case), who executive produces through Bambú Producciones. Rafa García is the director of photography, and Federico Jusid composes the score.

Where Is It Filming?

Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed locations, but local reports point to the Galician coast and the municipality of Ares in northwest Spain. That fits a story rooted in a region still remembered for the real-life crisis.

When Will It Release?

There is no official date yet. With filming just started, a second-half 2027 release looks most likely. Want more upcoming film and series updates? Keep exploring Technosports for the latest entertainment news, and check back as Netflix reveals more.
