Onam Just Got Crowded: Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Locks August 21 Release

The Onam 2026 box office battle just gained another contender. Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s romantic comedy Bethlehem Kudumba Unit now has an official release date — August 21 — and it’s walking straight into one of the most competitive festive weekends Mollywood has seen in a while.

Bethlehem Kudumba : Overview

A Three-Way Onam Clash

The announcement came directly from Nivin Pauly on social media, alongside a fresh still from the film confirming the date. With Bethlehem Kudumba Unit now locked in, it joins an already stacked Onam lineup, going head-to-head with Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Khalifa and Dulquer Salmaan’s I’m Game.

Onam has traditionally been one of the biggest theatrical windows in Malayalam cinema, comparable to how major festive releases dominate other Indian film industries during their own key holiday seasons — a release-strategy pattern well documented on Wikipedia. Three major stars releasing films in the same window signals just how much confidence each team has in their respective projects, even as it splits audience attention and screen availability across the state.

Why Fans Are Excited

Director Girish AD, who earned widespread acclaim for Premalu, brings his signature breezy, relatable storytelling style to this pairing of Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. Given Girish AD’s track record with grounded, feel-good romances that connect with younger audiences, expectations are high that Bethlehem Kudumba Unit could carve out its own space even amid the crowded Onam competition.

Nivin Pauly, known for a string of successful romantic comedies throughout his career, seems to be leaning into familiar territory here, while Mamitha Baiju continues to build on her growing reputation as one of Malayalam cinema’s promising young talents.

What’s Next

With the release date locked and competition already confirmed, expect promotional activity, trailers, and first-look reveals to ramp up steadily as August approaches. How the three big Onam releases eventually split screens and box office numbers will be one of the more closely watched stories in Malayalam cinema this year.
