Could the ODI Tri-Series Finally Stage a Comeback Ahead of ICC ODI World Cup 2027?

For a generation of cricket fans, few formats stirred as much excitement as the classic ODI triangular series — India, Australia, Sri Lanka, all fighting it out night after night. That format quietly faded away, but now, with the ODI game searching for relevance in a T20-dominated world, there’s genuine talk of bringing it back.

Shubman Gill’s Case for Change

Rather than tampering with the format itself, India’s ODI captain has pushed a different fix. Speaking at a recent press conference, Gill argued that triangular or quadrangular series once made ODI cricket genuinely fun to watch, since teams weren’t stuck facing the same opponent repeatedly across a bilateral series. His suggestion pushes back against growing calls to trim ODIs down to 40 overs, arguing the structure of scheduling — not the format itself — is the real problem.

England Cricket Board Responds

According to Dainik Jagran, ECB CEO Richard Gould acknowledged Gill’s comments and confirmed that several ODI tri-series fixtures are already lined up over the next 12 to 18 months. While England’s own calendar currently favors more compact formats, Gould signalled the board remains open to exploring tri-series as a genuine option going forward.

Why It Matters

With ODI cricket increasingly squeezed between T20’s popularity and Test cricket’s prestige, reviving the tri-series format could offer a genuine middle path — competitive, varied, and fan-friendly — heading into the next World Cup cycle.
